Midwifery Laboratory
Midwifery Undergraduate Education is a training that requires both theoretical knowledge and skill. It is necessary for the students to acquire the care practices that will be performed on the patients in the clinics primarily in the laboratory environment. For this reason, the equipment of the skill laboratories and the skills training in the laboratory environment of the students are very important.
The Midwifery Laboratory of our university is organized with models and laboratory materials suitable for the skills that students need to acquire.
Medical Skills Laboratory is used commonly for the nursing applications and similar applications with the Department of Nursing.
Applications carried out in the Midwifery Application Laboratory are as follows; Leopold maneuvers in pregnancy, vaginal (speculum) and bimanual examination, listening baby heartbeat with a handheld doppler, normal labor simulation, dystocia simulation, dilatation-effacement examination, episiotomy repair, preparation of sterilized equipment and surgical set preparation, woman health applications (breast self-exam, vaginal self-exam, pap-smear exam, etc.), reproduction health-family planning applications (intra uterine device, condom, etc.) and newborn physical examination.
Laboratory practices are carried out by working individually with each student in accordance with the contents of vocational courses under the supervision of specialist instructors and in that way, students acquire the necessary skills before starting clinical practice.
Midwifery Application Laboratory Equipment
All necessary equipment is present in this laboratory for the applications to be carried out in accordance with the Curriculum of Üsküdar University Health Sciences Faculty Midwifery Department (see: Inventory).
The "Enhanced Mother-Newborn Labor Simulator", which has new advanced technological features added to the laboratory of the Department of Midwifery, allows all normal and abnormal situations that may be encountered in women in the real-life pregnancy, birth and postpartum process to be simulated in the laboratory environment through the scenarios created and in this way, it allows to observe the situations that students may encounter in real life on the model and to perform the necessary midwifery interventions.
The labor simulator with advanced technological features allows students to examine the fetal position as well as the vital signs of the pregnant woman on the model with near-human features (Leopold maneuvers) and thus determine the position and size of single or twin babies in the mother's womb.
In addition to evaluating the suitability of the pelvic structure for delivery with vaginal examination, the simulation model also provides the opportunity to perform normal vaginal delivery, breech delivery, shoulder dystocia, placenta birth, episiotomy incision and repair, postpartum uterine massage and intervention in cord problems.
With the new simulation model, students will be able to develop the ability to monitor the progress and rotations of the fetus in the birth canal as well as fetal distress states, changes in the life functions of the mother, and intervene in all abnormal situations including maternal resuscitation.
The baby simulation model will enable students to learn all neonatal care practices, including neonatal resuscitation, in a laboratory environment.
