Perfusion Laboratory

Our perfusion laboratory provides students with the opportunity to learn the most of the cases that may occur during their professional lives under the supervision of responsible perfusionist with the devices such as heart lung pump, heat exchanger, operating room table, operating room top lamp, which our students will encounter in the field after graduation.

Purpose of Perfusion Program

The students of this program cooperate with experts such as cardiovascular surgeon and anesthesiologist. They prepare and operate:

- Heart-lung support devices used in heart surgeries,

- Heart-lung support devices used in circulatory and respiratory failure.

Characteristics of Perfusionist

  • Manages the heart-lung machine, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular support devices.
  • Prepares the preoperative perfusion.
  • Follows physiological parameters, blood gases and blood biochemistry results and anticoagulation during cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal circulation, the patient, takes necessary actions and maintain relevant records.
  • Performs necessary procedures related to myocardial protection such as cardioplegia application.
  • Helps to protect the donor tissues and organs if necessary.
  • Performs hemofiltration-ultrafiltration and apheresis applications.
  • Performs hypothermia applications and body temperature regulation.
  • Applies transcorporeal circulatory equipment through the blood and blood products transfusion and the application of medicines and medical agents required by specialist physicians.
  • Provides perfusion of isolated organs and extremities.
  • Enables the monitoring, analysis and the necessary interventions of blood gases and blood biochemistry.
  • Participates actively in preoperative patient preparation and postoperative mortality and morbidity meetings.
  • Produces platelet gel if necessary.
  • Decides the materials and techniques necessary for extracorporeal circulation functions in consultation with the physician.
  • Provides support for the transport of the patient who is in extracorporeal circulation support.
  • Keeps records of extracorporeal circulatory systems and patient circulation.
  • Supports the training and competence / performance evaluation of the perfusionist, perfusionist candidates and other medical personnel in relation to extracorporeal circulatory systems.
  • Takes part in quality control studies.
  • Participates in scientific activities related to the field in order to ensure professional development, monitors and evaluates scientific publications.
  • Complies with professional ethics.
  • Being sensitive to patient rights.

Employment Opportunities for Perfusionists

Those who have successfully completed the perfusion program can work in public and private sector, in hospitals where heart surgery and organ transplantation are performed, and they can take part in scientific researches and find employment opportunities in biomedical device companies.

Work Fields of Perfusionists

Perfusionists can work in private and public hospitals operating room units, biomedical device manufacturing companies. They can also work as academicians in foundation and state universities.
