Üsküdar University Welcomed the New Academic Year…

Üsküdar University 2022-2023 Academic Year opening was held with a ceremony. President of Üsküdar University Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized the importance of the science production in his remarks and indicating that traditionalism is great but it can be disadvantageous and Tarhan said “Traditionalism makes us fall behind. We must create new traditions by protecting our current traditions. Being hung up on the ancient history makes us the object of the science in an era where technology is at the forefront.”. Prof. İbrahim Öztek gave the first course of the new academic year titled “From Yesterday to Today, Sultans of the Medicine” in the ceremony where academicians who completed their 50 years in their profession were presented with plaquettes.  Öztek advised students that they study hard and produce science for this country. Üsküdar University student Climate Ambassador Melisa Sarıkaya also participated in the ceremony with her speech.

President of Üsküdar University and President of Supreme Council of Management Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan made the opening speech in the ceremony held in the Üsküdar University, NP Health Campus İbn-i Sina Auditorium.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “We are a university put efforts into a joint goal where the youth and senior generations have common ground”

Stating that now currently 24 thousand students continue their education Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said: “We gave 34 thousand graduates within last 10 years. Today we will hold robing ceremony for your professors who got academically promotion. Judges also wear robs. These robs have two qualities.  They have no pockets or buttons.  Not having buttons symbolizes that you can only button down to just and truth and not bow before anything but just and truth.  Not having pockets symbolizes that it is not executed for an interest. Moreover, we present plaquettes to our professors who fulfilled 50 years in the profession. We are a university put efforts into a joint goal where the youth and senior generations have common ground.”.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “We aim to raise our students as Nobel candidates”

Emphasizing that our vision as a university is to raise students as Nobel candidates Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said: “We always mention our vision for our students who came our university to study, in order to also have this dream. While doing this, we say that we cannot be universal by not being local first.  We must achieve modernization by protecting our own culture in order to move forward in this life in a healthy manner.”.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “We missed out the industrial revolution due to the discontinuation in the era of thinking”

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that one of the Sultans of science is Mehmet the Conqueror and continued:

“We know him as the sultan of the conquest.  He had an observatory in Tophane built by bringing the student of the Ulugh Bey who built the observatory in Samarkand, Halil Kuşçu to İstanbul. As a person who was thinking beyond his era, he paved the way for the innovation.  Without a mental transformation, a scientific transformation cannot exist and without a scientific transformation, a military transformation cannot happen. Mehmet the Conqueror realized a great mental transformation. Mehmet the Conqueror was greatly open to innovations and he had a vision to have designs beyond the era done. As society, we know the conquest of Istanbul as an event that he started a new era. Actually, the thing changed the era was not the conquest but the discovery of the artillery.  By inventing artillery, it was understood that fortresses could be destroyed and that changed the feudal structure during middle ages and caused the emergence of the bourgeoisie. The feudal structure in Europe changed and a community that was getting wealthy emerged. Then, the social structure began to scatter. The world had seen that fortresses were not a place where those with power could hide anymore.  That is, the era did not change with the conquest but with science. However, ulemas who were against science showed the observatory in Tophane as the reason for the plaque and destroying the observatory with artillery paused the era of thinking in the Ottoman Empire. Well, the main reason that we missed out the industrial revolution is the discontinuation in the era of thinking.”.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “We have to question everything”

Reminding that madrasa which gave sciences and philosophy, religious studies and astronomy, and geography together in today’s Cağaloğlu High School, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said “both spiritual knowledge and rational sciences were studied in this madrasa. Later, Sultan Abdulhamid established darülfünun (university) twice. Darülfunun was known as a place for sciences.  After 200 years, they got closed, as well. As a result of that, two type of people were raised in the Ottoman. One group was following the religion blindly and the other group was against this group. Children that Abdulhamid raised were able to catch that era and they achieved to demolish that structure. When we are behind the era, we face the consequences of going backwards. Once we miss the innovation, we go back. As a university, we have to question everything.”.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “We must use the power of science well”

Making remarks on that the traditionalism is great but can be disadvantageous Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said “Traditionalism makes us fall behind. We must create new traditions by protecting our current traditions. Being hung up on the ancient history makes us the object of the science in an era where technology is at the forefront. Others produce and we use it. We can be only market of the developed countries. We must be those who create a market but not become the market itself. For instance, we grow hazelnut the most but we cannot lead our hazelnut policy, others do. Timbers come from Africa in the world, the policy for timber was governed by France. The imperialist system created a power by using science. This is called soft power. The more we do better things in science and the more we develop, the more we become powerful”.

Prof.  Nevzat Tarhan: “Science must be for society, it must not serve to personal interest”

Emphasizing that as a university our primal vision is our students to have profession, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that “In addition, there are R&D policies. R&D is essential. We established the Brainpark Incubation Center. Companies in our incubation center have begun to produce some devices especially brain stimulating devices. We established a laboratory to analyzes transgenetic cells. President of TÜBİTAK Hasan Mandal visited our university to support projects of our students and invited them to the Technofest. Another vision is to inform society. We put effort to realize this, as well. With this regard, it is very valuable that our professors carry out their works visibly; present their studies to the flow of science and publish into a book. Science must be for society, it must not serve to personal interest. It is also important to transform science into product. Industrialization and commercialization always happen thanks to science.”

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “We achieved to become the 3rd foundation university with the most patent application”

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that one of the most important priorities of a university is to carry out Project continuously and continued: “We must discuss that how we can make a project out of every work we do and we must determine a goal and a logical framework. We must create a way after we analyze our strengths and weaknesses. We always receive appreciation from the workplaces our students work. All of these makes us happy.  These kinds of feedbacks consist our one of the biggest brand powers in this work we carry out. We have started to see the results of our quality studies, as well. We continue to attend the G20. We will attend the N20 meetings held within the G20 in Indonesia in the next 2 weeks.  We will have a presentation there. We achieved to become the 3rd foundation university with the most patent application. The effort by our incubation center stands out here.”.
