Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, who stated that the rhythm in the human brain accelerated or slowed down with music, made evaluations about the treatment with music within the scope of June 21 World Music Day. Tarhan mentioned that people encounter music as soon as they are born and that the universe actually works like an orchestra. Tarhan stated "There is music in the whole universe. Therefore, there is no human psychology independent of music. Music habits have a great impact on people's psychological alertness, the vividness of their spiritual memory and attention, and the increase in learning speed.”. Tarhan pointed out that if music is used for good purposes, it will positively affect mood, and if used for bad purposes, it can increase the feeling of anger and depression.

"Music used with ill intentions increases the feeling of depression"

President Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan made evaluations about the effect of music on the brain and its reflections on psychology for June 21, World Music Day.

The effects of music vary depending on individual to individual

Stating that the concept defined as music is the way the brain perceives sound, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "Quartz crystals in the inner ear convert sound energy into electrical energy. Electrical energy is also perceived and interpreted around the jelly in the brain. In this way, the person attaches meaning to music according to their culture and psychological infrastructure. Thus, music has a positive or negative effect on the person. Therefore, music has effects that vary according to the individual.".

Our brain also dances along with the music

Tarhan stated that the rhythm in the human brain accelerates or slows down with the music in the measurements made, "Fast, slow, rising and falling rhythms affect the nervous system of the person. Our brain perceives these electrical messages and converts them into chemical messages. Along with music, our brains actually dance. Fast rhythms, slow rhythms, rising and falling rhythms... According to all these rhythms, music affects the autonomic nervous system through the brain. According to the effect of music, the brain secretes stress hormones. Parasympathetic voices come into play, and our nervous system goes into a fight-or-flight response. If it enters the combat response, the muscles of the shoulders, neck, waist, back contract, vascular resistance increases and blood pressure rises. Pupils get bigger, we focus on war and danger. When the rhythm changes, the music activates a second parasympathetic system. By giving messages such as 'The danger is gone, relax, calm down, you are now at peace', it activates the body's longest nerve vagus and relaxes the brain. It is also confirmed by neurobiological research that music acts as a serious tool in slowing down and accelerating our autonomic nervous system, relaxing our body and moving into a combat state.".

The positive or negative effect of music is related to the meaning that the person attaches to this music...

Stating that the positive and negative effects of music on the person are related to the meaning that the person attaches to the music, Tarhan said that "After heavy music such as heavy metal comes, the brain activates five types of chemicals that we call the five horsemen of darkness. Dangerous emotions such as hatred, anger, hatred, jealousy, hostility are activated and actually receive pleasure. In other words, people raise the volume to achieve pleasure. There is a temporary excitement in the person and the war message goes to the brain. Along with it are triggered stress hormones. If it is short-term, it does not pose a danger, but if it is long-term, damage to the person's organs begins.".

Tarhan added that when there is a short-term exposure, it gives instant excitement and pleasure to the person and also said that this type of music is seriously addictive in the person Tarhan continued his remarks as follows:

"If music is used for good, it takes a person's mood to a positive mood. If used for bad purposes, it is addictive to the person like substance abuse. It increases the feeling of anger, depression and causes the desire to die. We should not question the music itself here because there are cultural differences specific to the individual. The positive or negative impact of music is related to the meaning that a person attaches to this music.".

If moods can be translated into musical beauty, music will resonate with people

Stating that the most beneficial music for the human mood is programmed music, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "Music contains emotions such as pain, joy, enthusiasm and passion in the human mood. If all these moods can be translated into musical beauty, music will resonate with people. Not everyone can do it. Turning pain into a musical beauty is about the art side of the business. There are very serious influences in the culture related to nature. All over Central Asia, all the way to China, all show the influence of that culture on respect for nature. This is reflected in the music. The most beneficial music for the human mood is programmed music. For example, mehter anthem, water music containing water sound are programmed music. It activates certain areas in the brain in the person. It has a specific purpose. If a composition is made with thoughts such as 'I want to provide muscle relaxation, a state of well-being, a state of calmness, I want to awaken a sense of eternity in a person', the emotion can be turned into a beautiful musical. Since the music in Central Asia is also at peace with nature, these elements have been used a lot. The sound of water, the reflections of the sounds of other creatures were used. All these are things that are good for the human mood.”.

Everything that is at peace with nature is also at peace with the soul

Stating that "If a music is at peace with nature, it is also at peace with our soul," Tarhan said that "Things that are close to nature and are good are also good for the soul. Everything that is at peace with nature is also at peace with the soul. Music that is at peace with nature is also useful. It can also be called organic music. Music from Central Asian culture is actually full organic music, polyphonic. It is the transformation of nature into musical beauty. It is the processing of sounds in nature like an orchestra.” Tarhan added that if rhythms in nature can be converted into notes, they could have a global impact.

Those with musical intelligence can use music to learn

Pointing out that there is music in the whole universe and that there is no human psychology independent of music, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "Music treatment is currently considered as complementary medicine. With the digital age, the equivalents of music can be found more clearly in the brain in the coming times. When it is found, we will be able to reveal the positive effect of music on people.".

Stating that people encounter music as soon as they are born, Tarhan completed his remarks as follows:

"The universe works like an orchestra, there is music in the whole universe. Therefore, there is no human psychology independent of music. Music habits are very effective in increasing the psychological alertness of people, their spiritual memory, attention and learning speed. There is even talk of an intelligence called musical intelligence. Gardner, who found multiple intelligences, identified 8 areas of intelligence. One of them is musical intelligence. In people with musical intelligence, the brain works better in musical environments. We do not say to these people as 'You are necessarily going to be a musician.' We say, 'Use music to enhance your learning.' Whatever music increases your attention, opens your mind, study with that music, do what you care about with that music. In those kinds of people, the music stimulates a sense of flow. The sense of flow is such a thing that, as Einstein said, when you get caught up in that sense of flow, you forget to eat.".
