An event titled “Conscious and Secure Digital World-Cyber Security” was organized by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Üsküdar University. Cybersecurity Expert Ömer Yerlikaya was the guest speaker. Drawing attention to the increasing cybercrimes in the digital world, Yerlikaya emphasized the need for taking precautions against these crimes. He also mentioned that "dumpster diving" techniques, which involve gathering information from trash, play an important role in fraudsters' methods of collecting data and cautioned the audience.

The event was held at the Sokrates Hall, E Block, Üsküdar University South Campus.

Cybersecurity Expert Ömer Yerlikaya started his speech by introducing the SİBERAY project. He highlighted the risks posed by the growing cybercrimes in the rapidly developing digital world, both individually and at the societal level. Yerlikaya provided information about the processes involved in crime formation and stated that comprehensive work is ongoing in this field.

Precautions should be taken to protect against cyber crimes

Yerlikaya noted that criminal cases are increasingly taking place in cyberspace in recent years, and crimes committed through online shopping and websites are becoming more common. He emphasized that individuals should take various precautions to protect themselves from cybercrimes, highlighting the importance of creating secure passwords and being vigilant against digital fraudsters.

Increasing digital literacy is an important step in preventing cyber crimes…

Yerlikaya also pointed out that cyberattacks not only pose serious threats at the individual level but also at institutional and national security levels. He stressed that institutions should keep their firewalls up to date and raise awareness among their employees on this issue. Additionally, he mentioned that increasing digital literacy in society could be a crucial step in preventing cybercrimes.

Take precautions against dumpster diving techniques of cyber attackers!

Yerlikaya stated that "dumpster diving" techniques play a significant role in fraudsters' methods of gathering information and made the following remarks: “Cyber attackers assess every detail to reach their targets. For example, they can obtain your personal information from an undestroyed bill thrown into the trash. Using this information, they can gain access to companies’ admin panels and then take over the system using a brute force method. Make sure to securely dispose of documents in your trash. Never throw away cargo boxes with your Turkish identity numbers exposed. Such neglect can lead to serious consequences.”

Do not fall for phone scams

Yerlikaya warned citizens about phone scams, particularly stressing that elderly individuals are often victims of this method. He stated that "Law enforcement will never ask for money from you. Fraudsters may call and scare you with serious matters like a terrorism investigation, requesting money. In such cases, always verify the identity of the caller and terminate the call if suspicious. We are struggling to raise awareness among elderly individuals on this issue. Many victims have lost their money or gold to fraudsters. Be cautious to prevent yourself and your loved ones from falling into such traps and make it a habit to always verify."

The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation after answering the participants' questions.
