Sleep quality is very important in elderly health!

Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Elderly Care Program Instructor Büşra Kul attended the seminar organized by Fatih Municipality as part of the 18-24 March Respect for the Elderly Week. Kul, who met with the participants in the seminar titled "Protecting Health in Old Age", comprehensively discussed age-related health problems, the importance of regular physical activity, the effects of psychological well-being and social participation on elderly individuals.

In the seminar held at Fatih Municipality Yadigar Kahve, Instructor Gamze Uğur and Res. Asst. Kimya Kılıçaslan also took part.

Physical activities improve the quality of life!

Pointing out that it is very important to maintain health status in old age, Kul stated that physical activity plays a critical role in health. Instructor. Büşra Kul stated that "Old age is a critical process for the protection and development of the health status of individuals and the continuation of their daily lives as independently as possible. During this period, regular and correct physical activity and exercises make important contributions to the protection of both physical and mental health. Physical activity and exercise programs for the elderly; It aims to reduce the risk of chronic diseases while at the same time improving the quality of life."

In this context, Instructor Büşra Kul suggested different types of exercise such as aerobic exercises to reduce mental decline in a way that contributes to the health of the elderly, flexibility and balance exercises to reduce the risk of falling, housework and gardening for mental health.

Healthy aging is not just physical health...

In the presentation, it was also emphasized that mental and social health is important in healthy aging as well as physical health. At the same time, it was stated that an active life is possible with different activities and thus the quality of life can increase.

Kul mentioned that it is important for elderly individuals to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, to avoid daytime sleep and to stay away from heavy meals before going to bed in terms of healthy sleep patterns and stated that "Sleep is one of the most important processes of physical and mental regeneration. Problems such as insomnia, insomnia, sleep apnea and restless legs syndrome in elderly individuals can adversely affect both psychological and cognitive health. For this reason, it is very important to plan sleep hygiene, regulation of the sleep environment and sleep hours."

Falls can be reduced with the right precautions

Finally, Kul pointed out that falling incidents can be prevented in the elderly and stated that "Falls are serious events that reduce the quality of life of elderly individuals and leave negative physical and psychological effects. However, they can be prevented to a large extent with simple environmental measures and appropriate exercise programs. It is necessary to act consciously on many issues, from the lighting of the house to non-slip mats and the use of canes." The seminar ended with a photo shoot.
