At the press conference, Üsküdar University Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences Dean Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak and Method Research Company Deputy General Manager Esengül Berişah made speeches.
Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak: "The main role of men has been damaged"
Stating that a series of research were carried out and the basic social role of men was examined, Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak said that "After the earthquake, we thought that men were very neglected in terms of social roles, and that men were the ones who lost their basic roles. We have seen that men's basic social role of bringing bread to their homes and keeping their families safe has been damaged."
Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak said that "Values such as family, marriage and children are sacred in Türkiye. Men do not think that ‘a bachelor's life is a king's life’ as it is thought. Men still want to be family men and to have good marriages. The main reason that stresses them out is not the issue with themselves, but the inability to fulfill the responsibilities of their families. They tend to be happy, they are not dissatisfied with their situation, but they like to complain. Men are conservatives."
Prof. Kaynak: "Rehabilitative treatment cannot be applied without knowing men"
Noting that a rehabilitative treatment cannot be applied for society without knowing men and knowing the world of men, Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak stated that "There are several problems of the period we are going through. A civilizational transformation is taking place. There is sociological and psychological pressure on the masses created by this. There are very serious problems such as exposure to terrorism, coups, and economic conditions that Türkiye has been going through for many years. We are a society that has been exposed to natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. The vast majority of these create post-traumatic stress disorder. There is also such a thing as post-traumatic growth. In order to grow after trauma, it is necessary to make certain strategic decisions and develop appropriate tactics."
Is men's negligence magnifying women's problems?
Stating that the neglect of men in the society and the lack of sufficient research are a factor that magnifies women's problems, Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak said that "We think that our main problem stems from this."
Prof. Barış Erdoğan: "We have come from the king man to the man who is scolded"
Head of the Department of Sociology at Üsküdar University Prof. Barış Erdoğan stated that men have also changed in the changing world and that they are also facing many problems, and that he used to feel like the king of his castle in a man's house, "Now a man who comes to his house has to cook, wash the dishes, and is even scolded by his wife for not doing this job well. In other words, we have come from the king man to the man who is being scolded," he said. Prof. Barış Erdoğan also stated that men think "what is happening to us" and said, "For years, in the patriarchal order, men have been constantly flattered, you are always strong, you can do what you want, and suddenly the masculinity crisis has come. The crisis of masculinity exists not only in the home, but also on the street and in social life. You have to understand men. You have to understand the anger in them. Not sympathy, but empathy. This is also the reason behind the increasing trend of violence in Türkiye and in the world in recent years."
"In the relationship between men and women, the cards are being redistributed..."
Noting that men have a longing for the past, Prof. Barış Erdoğan said that "The cards are being redistributed in male-female relations. Everyone wants to maintain the advantageous position of the old system. However, everyone also wants to take a position according to the new situation. Women want to be financially and morally secured by the men in the old system. However, on the other hand, they demand their freedom. Everyone wants the advantage of the old system, but they do not want to give away freedoms. This creates a certain area of conflict.”
Esengül Berişah: "We see that men are stressed in their home and work life"
Esengül Berişah, Deputy General Manager of Method Research Company, announced the results of the research.
Esengül Berişah said that "In the research, the Marmara Region seems to be more realistic. It seems that the level of education, awareness and analysis of interpretation are more realistic. It seems that all men agree on stress. We see that men are stressed at home and at work."
