Üsküdar University, which has attracted attention with its academic studies since its establishment in 2011 with artificial intelligence applications in Health Sciences, has been giving the course titled "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Innovation in Health" to the students of the Faculty of Medicine for a year. Thus, the students of the Faculty of Medicine can see the modeling approaches used in big data analysis in a project application.

Paradigm Shift in Personalized Medical Practices

In Health Sciences, big data and artificial intelligence (AI) are playing an important role with their potential for innovation, disease diagnosis, follow-up and treatment response prediction, while also transforming the way healthcare is provided. With its high resolution and evolving data collection tools, health data paves the way for many exciting new discoveries in clinical interpretation processes, especially biomarker detection. The paradigm shift towards precision medicine with AI applications, high-speed machines and big data has become more visible in recent years. In this whole process, predictive models created with deep learning algorithms, which replace the old generation superficial learning algorithms, provide physicians with higher accuracy in diagnosis, follow-up and treatment processes with raw data.

High-accuracy models in diagnosis and treatment will become widespread...

Under the leadership of Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, Üsküdar University has been pursuing this vision for more than 10 years with the "Therapeutic Brain Mapping, Biological Psychiatry and Neurotechnology Working Group", where the fields of psychiatry, psychology, molecular biology, genetics, biotechnology and engineering work together by conducting interdisciplinary studies with the "Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems Application and Research Center".

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan drew attention to the importance of the subject with the words "Artificial intelligence technologies will eliminate the need for the wisdom of the physician", and it is aimed to widely use high-accuracy models in health sciences that combine the knowledge and clinical experience of the physician. It can make quick decisions, and it is used widely in diagnosis and treatment processes.

It is aimed to complete the clinical interpretation project...

With the "Artificial Intelligence and Data Science for Innovation in Health" course, which is offered at Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine and taken by all students since the 4th grade, physician candidates are given the ability to develop basic code skills with programming language, to use and interpret the concepts of big data, machine learning, image processing, optimization, modeling with learning and application tools. Üsküdar University, which currently carries out big data analysis studies together with its science and application partner NPİSTANBUL Hospital and makes the application developed in this process unique with an international patent application, completes the clinical interpretation project of the model result obtained with big data by analyzing the raw neuroimaging data of the students at the end of the 16-week curriculum.

Artificial intelligence and data-focused courses contribute to clinical competence...

Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems Application and Research Center Director Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel said that they believe that artificial intelligence and big data-oriented courses given in the Medical Faculties of universities such as Harvard, Stanford, and Imperial College London provide students with complementary skills in the development and diversification of their basic and clinical competencies.
