President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated the topic of "The Palestinian Attack and the Effect of Its Experiences on the Psychology of Children" for Kanal 7 News Hour. Pointing out that lack of empathy has bad consequences in physical violence incidents in Palestine, Tarhan said that "The primary right of the child is to live in a safe and warm family environment. This is the most fundamental right of the child. To take away this right is the greatest cruelty, the greatest savagery. Those who support Children's Rights in the world do not comply with Children's Rights."

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "In the small world of the child, fear, not trust, comes to the fore"

In his remarks, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that parents should talk about this issue with their children. Tarhan said that "Some parents completely miss the child, do not let them watch it, pretend they do not exist. Some parents are completely uninterested, leaving their children as they are, no matter how they are affected. The truths here vary according to the age group. When you expose the child to this in children aged 0-6 years in preschool, a situation arises in the child as if the life of the world is not safe. In fact, in the child's small world, fear, not trusting, comes to the fore. Related to this matter, there is a syndrome called bad world syndrome, which is very common in society. Fear is formed, and irritability, outbursts, aggression and introversion appear. Ideally, children should see these programs in a limited amount under parental guidance, in a way that is appropriate for the child's age, because life is such a reality."

"They are also experiencing their own War of Independence"

Noting that lack of empathy has bad consequences in the cases of physical violence in Palestine, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that "The Western world has completely forgotten empathy. We see this in the aggressive forces there. They are not aware of the suffering and sorrow that people are going through. We also experienced the War of Independence, and we experienced the same thing. We were also occupied. We have experienced similar situations. There has been a National Struggle, and there have been Wars of Independence. Now, they are experiencing their own War of Independence. It is necessary to explain it to children in this way. If we explain these things to children, they will see that it is an inevitable fact of life. In fact, even if there is no war, there are items such as tidying up your room, putting the items you bought in their place, not the sweet, beautiful and fun parts of life, in order to fully teach life to a child in kindergarten. One of those items is taught knowing that the fish in the aquarium will die. If the child doesn't know about it, the child will be terrified and scared when that fish dies. There are facts of this life. Wars are an undesirable fact of life. It is fun in the video game; however, in real life it is important to be able to empathize with it, to put yourself in the shoes of the victims there, to understand what they feel, to understand their pain."

"The human brain feels the need to make sense of it, so it goes to the past"

Underlining that there is a 60 percent civilian death rate in Palestine and that all these experiences should be explained in accordance with the spirit and age group of the child, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "In the world of young children, it is necessary to make age-appropriate interpretation because there is a feature of the human brain, which is when a new subject comes to new information, it feels the need to make sense of it, so it goes to the past. They make assumptions about their past experiences or the future. One makes a sense of it and then makes decisions such as useful – useless, valid – invalid, safe – insecure, good – not good, but when the cannot make sense of it, the child keeps it in the dangerous information file in the brain and there is constant anxiety and stress. For this reason, it is important to inform the parents to make sense of it in a healthy and correct way, and they will explain to the child that this is a fact of life like a great person, but they will not expect a great human reaction from them."

Underlining that the most basic and primary right of the child is to live in a safe and warm family environment, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that "Let's take a stand on this. This is a debriefing… Well, doing nothing or standing neutral is abandoning oneself to meaninglessness. To disapprove is to make sense. When one does this, a child is told that I do not approve of this and it is wrong. It is always how viruses make a disease. If the child is taught the concepts of friend and foe, good and evil, by saying that these are social viruses, social viruses, wars are caused by them, the child will make sense of it and be relieved. It is very important to make the children there feel that we are really with them with our hands, our tongues and our hearts. The primary right of the child is to live in a safe and warm family environment. This is the most fundamental right of the child. There is a right to live in a safe family environment, and taking away this right is the greatest cruelty, the greatest maliciousness, the greatest savagery, it is necessary to know this.
