13th of the program “Corona Diaries: Occupational Therapy Interventions” was held

Üsküdar University Health Sciences Institute Occupational Therapy Postgraduate Students held the 13th program titled "Corona Diaries: Occupational Therapy Interventions” under the guidance of Prof. Sevda Asqarova. In the program moderated by Berkay Karpuz, a student of Üsküdar University Occupational Therapy Department, presentations were made in five different fields in Occupational Therapy Interventions.


“The positive effects of sleep on the immune system have become even more important”

Occupational Therapist Özgenur Vural made remarks under the title of “Activities that an Occupational Therapist Should Practice in Individuals Who Have Adeviz Capsulitis During the Covid-19 Process”. Vural said: “The positive effects of sleep on the immune system have gained even more importance in these days when we are struggling with the coronavirus epidemic. Cells of the immune system have the ability to reproduce, regenerate and heal during sleep.


The best time when these cells are renewed is night sleep. Our body, which gets enough sleep, has enough resistance to protect against many microorganisms, including coronavirus. It also helps to fight free radicals and toxins with melatonin released during sleep. If you do not get enough sleep, the immune system may weaken as the cells are not renewed, and this may invite diseases.”.


 “The need for tele-health and tele-rehabilitation services has also increased considerably”

Occupational Therapist Serenay Şengül touched upon the issue of adult education in the Covid-19 process with her Occupational Therapy and NPL approaches. Şengül said: “The reason why I prefer this topic in particular, you know that we have been struggling with the pandemic process in our country and around the world for about 8-9 months. This process interrupted the use of services by healthcare professionals and patients in need of health programs. The need for tele-health and tele-rehabilitation services has also increased considerably. While providing these services, I wanted to inform you on how communication should be when working with adults, issues to be considered in adult education and models. Nero linguistic programming is essentially the art and science of personal excellence. It is about how we filter our experiences from the outside world with our five senses and how we use them to achieve the results we desire.”.


Premature birth in newborns is a situation that has increased a lot in recent years

Addressing the issue of precaution in occupational therapy interventions in newborns during the pandemic process, Occupational Therapist Mustafa Karaaslan said: “Premature birth in newborns is a situation that has increased a lot in recent years. Fine and gross motor skills are the biggest problems we face in the future for occupational therapists working in the field of pediatrics. Premature infants, a term used for infants less than 37 weeks old, are at greater risk for short-term and long-term complications, including impediments to growth and cognitive development. Occupational therapists, physiotherapists and neurologists need to work in a disciplined manner in order to identify the problems of a child until the age of two and to concentrate on the treatment in the future.”.


Activity recommendations for geriatric individuals

Occupational Therapist Gülin Gürsel touched upon the issue of activity suggestions for geriatric individuals staying at home during the pandemic period. Gürsel said: “What we call activity is the fulfillment of a movement or task by the individual and the individual aspect of functionality. When it comes to activity, it is impossible not to say participation because these things that are actually one cannot be separated. What we call participation refers to participating in a life situation, that is, social life. These two definitions are really important since we are also social creatures. Every situation in our lives that prevents us from performing our activities negatively affects our quality of life. For this reason, it is very important for our quality of life that we engage in meaningful activities during these difficult times. This brings us to excellent places.”.


 “Interactive metronome is both an assessment and treatment tool”

Speaking about interactive metronome therapy in rehabilitation during the quarantine period, Occupational Therapist Asiye Gacav said: “Interactive metronome is a therapy method proven to improve cognition, attention, focus, language, executive functions, motor and sensory skills. Interactive metronome allows counselee to synchronize their whole body movements according to a training. It is both an assessment and a treatment tool. The components of the interactive metronome consist of three parts, the first is a computer with the software of the interactive metronome, the second is a headset for auditory feedback, and the third is the trigger device.”.
