Climate change is reducing biodiversity!
Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Medical and Aromatic Plants Program Asst. Prof. Tuğba Kaman participated online in the "Climate Change Summit" organized by Azerbaijan Technical University, Bahçeşehir University and Bilim Sen Ol Platformu in Azerbaijan. Kaman made a presentation titled "The Effects of Climate Change on Plant Biodiversity".
Participating in the summit online, the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Program Asst. Prof. Tuğba Kaman made a presentation titled "The Effects of Climate Change on Plant Biodiversity".
Climate change threatens plant species, reducing biodiversity
Emphasizing that plant biodiversity is vital for the health and sustainability of the ecosystem, Kaman said that climate change threatens plant species and reduces biodiversity. Kaman also emphasized that this situation can disrupt the balance of the ecosystem and affect the relationships in the food chain.
"Plant species with narrow distribution are in danger of extinction"
Asst. Prof. Tuğba Kaman stated that disorder can reduce productivity. Kaman stated that "Extreme heat, drought and irregular rainfall adversely affect the growth of plants. This can reduce productivity in agricultural products. Plant species with particularly narrow distribution may be in danger of extinction due to climate change. Deforestation and degradation reduce carbon storage capacity..."
"Awareness trainings contribute to the awareness of societies"
Expressing the importance of implementing practices that are resistant to climate change, Kaman said that "In agriculture, it is important to develop plant species that are resilient to climate change, create protected areas for threatened species, restore destroyed ecosystems, and protect soil health through organic farming. Saving water with sustainable irrigation and encouraging polyculture practices are also effective methods. Awareness trainings on these issues contribute to the awareness of individuals and societies. With the right strategies, the negative effects of climate change can be reduced."
The global importance of climate change and plant biodiversity was mentioned
In his presentation, Kaman drew attention to the global importance of climate change and plant biodiversity and stated that governments should develop comprehensive policies to cope with climate change, and that international cooperation would support the protection of ecosystems. Kaman said this is important for both sustainability and human well-being.
