The harms of using electronic cigarettes were discussed
Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean's Office organized a seminar titled "The Harms of Electronic Cigarette, Use and Combating Addiction". The seminar was attended by Specialist Psychologist Ceyda Şişman. Şişman made remarkable evaluations about the effects of addiction and electronic cigarette use on human health.
Faculty academicians and students participated in the seminar held at Üsküdar University South Campus E Block Socrates Hall.
Specialist Psychologist Ceyda Şişman: "Electronic cigarettes can cause serious health problems"
Specialist Psychologist Ceyda Şişman emphasized that addiction affects brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex and pleasure center, leading to a loss of control over willpower, and changes in dopamine levels trigger the cycle of addiction. Şişman stated that "Although e-cigarettes are considered safer than tobacco products, they can cause serious health problems such as fluid accumulation in the lungs and respiratory problems. Electronic cigarettes promote addiction with their nicotine content and attractive flavors. Users usually start using electronic cigarettes due to curiosity or the influence of the social environment, but nicotine addiction develops in a short time. This situation should not be considered as weakness of will, but as a disease that develops in the brain."
"Environmental factors play an important role in the formation of addiction"
Emphasizing the importance of the social environment in the fight against addiction, Şişman said that "Environmental factors such as family and friends play an important role in the formation of addiction. A healthy social environment is very effective in the fight against addiction. Social activities and taking advantage of health services can also help in the fight against addiction. In this context, we can use the support services of the Ministry of Health, such as the smoking cessation line."
In the seminar, the role of positive reinforcement and empathetic approach in supporting addicted individuals was emphasized. It was also stated that a positive social environment should be provided to increase the willpower of the individual.
The event ended after the questions of the participants were answered.
