Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "Organ donation is a high moral value"
Stating that donating means making sacrifices, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan expressed that "People with a high sense of empathy, wisdom capacity, and universal thinking by going beyond themselves are more objective when making decisions." Pointing out that disorders such as somatization disorder and panic disorder are more common in people who own their organs narcissistically, Prof. Tarhan said that "Unconscious people approach the issue of organ donation negatively, but at the moment, the prejudice against it in the society is gradually decreasing."
Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that "A person who can donate their organs has transcended themselves and deserves praise. Organ donation does not adversely affect a person."
President of Üsküdar University, Chairman of the Board of Directors of NPİSTANBUL Hospital, and Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated organ donation from a psychological point of view within the scope of November 3-9 Organ Donation Week.
"People with a high sense of empathy make more objective decisions"
Stating that donating means making sacrifices, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan expressed that "In order for a person to make sacrifices, one must be able to empathize. Empathy skills should be developed. Empathy is not an ability, but it is a skill and something that is learned."
Emphasizing that empathy should be learned from childhood, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that people who have a high sense of empathy, have the capacity for wisdom, and think universally by transcending themselves are more objective when making decisions.
Some psychological disorders can be seen in people who narcissistically own their organs
Stating that if a person dies without donating their organs, both the body and the organs will be mixed with the soil, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "This situation does not benefit the person or the society. If the person says, 'Let it be mine even if it goes bad,' there is narcissistic possessiveness. Somatization disorder and panic disorder disorders are much more common in people who narcissistically own their organs. These people attach such a high importance to their health that if a part of their body is numb, dizzy, or some irrational thoughts come to their minds, they panic because they say, ‘I am losing my mind.’ We call it narcissistic injury."
Emphasizing that people who have overcome their narcissism think more objectively about organ donation, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan continued his remarks as follows: "People of this maturity approve organ donation by saying, 'By donating my child's organs, I am touching someone else's life, and this means that my child's trace in the world continues' when their child or a relative dies. Only those who think big can become advocates. Those who say, 'I am important, others are not,' allow the hope that will change the lives of others to rot under the ground. It is not the organic substances in our bodies that make us human, but this structure."
"To be a traditionalist is to leave oneself behind"
Stating that the soul and body are rapidly separated from each other after death and that the soul has now finished its duty and has moved to another energy band, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan expressed that "There may be some prejudices about organ donation for believers. They may think, 'If the person who receives the organ does something wrong, a sin will be written on my relatives.' This is pure superstition. Without a person's free will, that person is not responsible for the wrong done."
Expressing that "We give blood, we are glad to give it," Prof. Nevzat Tarhan reminded that giving blood once a year is the prophet's advice. Stating that some perceive this situation as cupping, Prof. Tarhan made the following remarks:
"Regular blood donation prophetic advice..."
"In fact, if the Prophet had been at this time, he would have donated blood instead of cupping. When we think about religion with today's truths and give new answers to old questions, we understand that regular blood donation is the advice of the prophet. Cupping is a traditionalist idea. It is good to be traditional, but to be a traditionalist is to leave oneself behind. Those who do or have cupping done should not be offended, but unfortunately this is not an equivalent for the hadith. The hadith is to donate blood to the Red Crescent, which will be an equivalent for the hadith. I donated a lot of blood as long as my health allowed."
"A person who can donate their organs is worthy of praise"
Stating that 'my organs can be donated in case of my death' should be written on the identity cards with the consent of the person, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "If it is written, when this person dies, there is no need to ask their relatives anymore, their organs can be donated immediately because they have approval on their identity card. That is the ideal.”
Pointing out that cadaver donation is different from organ donation, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "Cadavers can also be donated to be used in anatomy, this is a completely different situation. Organ donation, on the other hand, is something that can benefit another person. A person who is able to donate their organs has transcended themselves and is worthy of praise. Organ donation does not adversely affect a person. However, a person who is prejudiced about this, who has never thought about this issue before, who is not used to surprises, will be stunned in such cases. It is necessary to leave one's prejudices behind. Organ donation does not adversely affect mental health. This is a sacrifice, and making such a sacrifice is a human value and emotion. The organ donor experiences the happiness of helping someone else, and the recipient of help experiences the excitement and joy of regaining their health. Both sides win.
It is not organ donation that should be opposed, but the sale of organs...
Stating that according to our belief system, it is accepted to donate one's organs, not to sell them, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "For this reason, no one can oppose organ donation on religious grounds, the thing to be opposed is the sale of organs. Unconscious people approach the issue of organ donation negatively, but at the moment, the prejudice against it in society is gradually decreasing. The Presidency of Religious Affairs also issued very good fatwas on organ donation and a constructive approach was taken. Therefore, these cultural prejudices in society are mostly due to ignorance."
"Organ donation is a high moral value"
Pointing out how the decision to donate organs can contribute to people's feeling of contributing to society, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan concluded his remarks as follows:
"You feel the same when you donate organs as you do when you feed a hungry person, contribute to the education of an orphan, or meet the needs of someone in need. Like the good feeling that a judge experiences when one dispenses justice, the positive feelings that a physician feels when they treat a patient, and their patient prays for them.
Organ donation is a high moral value. If there is a campaign about organ donation, if they ask me 'do you want to donate your organs', I will agree to print it on my ID card. If the state were to launch a campaign about this, if it started a mobilization, I would say, 'There is no harm in donating one’s organs when they die.'"
