Experts say that messy and dirty schools will reduce children's commitment to school and reduce their academic success, and that dirty and messy schools create negative role models for children's personal development.

Pointing out the hygiene problems caused by the lack of cleaning staff in schools, Head of the Department of Family Medicine Asst. Prof. Ayhan Özşahin stated that "The short-term effect of this situation is that children get sick more often. One of the long-term effects is that frequent illness leads to a slowdown in children's growth and development.”

Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine, Head of the Department of Family Medicine, Asst. Prof. Ayhan Özşahin evaluated the issue of hygiene in schools.

Hygiene is very critical in preventing infectious diseases...

Stating that "Hygiene is very critical in preventing infectious diseases. The prevention of infectious disease epidemics, which have caused great harm to humanity for centuries, has been achieved with the increasing level of hygiene in cities as well as medical applications such as vaccines and antibiotics," Asst. Prof. Ayhan Özşahin continued as follows:

"Hygiene problems lead to more frequent and widespread health problems such as respiratory diseases and diarrhea. If hygiene problems become permanent, diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery can be expected to cause epidemics. The frequent and widespread occurrence of these diseases will lead to an increase in school absences. Frequent illness can slow down children's growth and development."

In a disorderly and polluted environment, we feel uneasy!

Noting that cleanliness supports people's well-being, Asst. Prof. Ayhan Özşahin stated that "We feel good and happy in a psychologically orderly and clean environment. Therefore, we can concentrate better on our work. In a disorderly and polluted environment, we feel uneasy. We get distracted, our energy decreases. We have problems focusing on what we are doing. Not only do we fail at our job, but we also have an increased risk of accidents. These, in turn, increase our unhappiness."

Messy and dirty schools reduce children's commitment to school!

Asst. Prof. Ayhan Özşahin pointed out the importance of cleanliness in schools and continued his remarks as follows:

"Messy and dirty schools reduce children's commitment to school and reduce their academic achievement. A lack of cleaning staff leads to hygiene problems in schools. The short-term effect of this situation is that children get sick more often. One of the long-term effects is that frequent illness leads to a slowdown in children's growth and development."

A healthy and orderly environment increases the quality of life

Stating that the quality of life has gained importance today, and that the healthy and orderly environment is one of the main factors that increase the quality of life, Asst. Prof. Ayhan Özşahin said that "Another long-term effect is the weakening of children's commitment to school and the decrease in their academic success. The development of civilization in the world has also increased the level of hygiene in urban areas. Therefore, cleanliness has become one of the symbols of civilization and responsible societies. Another long-term effect of dirty and messy schools is that they create negative role models for children's personal development."

What can children do for hygiene in schools?

Emphasizing what children can do for hygiene in schools, Asst. Prof. Ayhan Özşahin concluded his remarks as follows:

"First of all, children's personal hygiene habits should be developed. It is recommended to wash their hands with soap and water after toileting, before and after meals, and if this is not possible, they should clean their hands with a wet towel. When they come home from school, it will be appropriate for them to change their clothes and wash their hands and face. If the hygiene level of the schools is found to be insufficient, measures such as washing school clothes more frequently and wiping school bags at home can also be recommended. Frequent use of liquids such as alcohol-containing cologne and hand sanitizer can cause dryness of the skin. Moreover, problems such as accidental drinking of such liquids may come to the fore."
