Prof. Nevzat Tarhan discussed the role of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in Addiction in the session titled "Frontiers of Medical and Clinical Neurosciences" at the World Neurotalk 2024 Conference, which he attended as an invited speaker, and expressed that "Especially in the treatment of addiction, it is aimed to remove the alcohol or substance used from the body first, and then to reduce the desire and desire for these substances."

Prof. Türker Ergüzel noted that the neuroimaging (EEG and fMRI) data obtained at NPİSTANBUL Hospital for 26 years were analyzed in the application and research centers of Üsküdar University and the BraiNP/NP Model was created, and said that the model, in which deep learning algorithms were used, could predict the preliminary diagnosis of different psychiatric diseases and the TMS treatment response in diseases diagnosed with depression at the level of 98%.

Brain stimulation techniques address the role of TMS in addiction

In his presentation titled "What is the promise of neuromodulation treatment in addiction Psychiatry", Prof. Nevzat Tarhan discussed brain stimulation techniques, the role of Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in addiction, and shared his projection for current meta-analysis studies, new studies, unanswered questions and near future studies in the field of neuromodulation. In his presentation, Prof. Tarhan explained the applications of NPİSTANBUL Hospital neuromodulation center and gave brief information about photobiomodulation (PBM), which has just been used in Alzheimer's, Traumatic Brain Injury, Parkinson's, Autism, Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Long-covid treatments.

Sharing the application and working principle of Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Prof. Tarhan stated that the purpose of this method is to stimulate deep brain regions with the TMU method. Especially in the treatment of addiction, it is aimed to remove the alcohol or substance used from the body first, and then to reduce the desire and desire for these substances. Tarhan shared the findings of recent studies revealing that deep TMU treatment reduces the desire of addiction patients to smoke, drink alcohol and use substances.

Prof. Tarhan also informed about the history of TMS applications in psychiatry since 1908 and rTMS human studies in substance addiction.

Sharing about the neurobiology of addiction and the parameters related to rTMS treatment in addiction, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan also informed the participants about the magnetic coils used.

NP-Model application, for which international patent application has been filed, was explained

After Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, Üsküdar University Advisor to the Rector, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (FENS) Software Engineering Department Lecturer Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel also made a presentation on the NP-Model application, for which Üsküdar University and NPİSTANBUL Hospital have applied for an international patent.

Reminding that BraiNP was developed under the consultancy of Prof. Nevzat Tarhan and made available with a web interface at npmodel.com, Prof. Ergüzel said, "In its current form, BraiNP provides high accuracy of brain wave measurements at a rate of 98 percent with predictive models of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), healthy control, unipolar-bipolar and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMU) response in depression."
