Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Department Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan talked about the historical process of dietitian profession. Arslan stated that "Today is a very important day. A day when two beautiful days coexist. June 6 is Dietitians' Day and at the same time, it is the day when you, our students, will wear white coats, which are the most important representatives of ethical and moral values and equal service understanding before their profession. That is why we are experiencing the excitement of today like you. Since the beginning of human history, every living thing has encountered some problems such as reproduction, shelter and nutrition, and undoubtedly, nutrition has been the most important topic of discussion throughout history. With the advancement of time, nutrition in parallel with the advancing technology is becoming a branch of science. In fact, in line with the rules of nutrition science, a professional group emerges that provides training to people to create personalized nutrition plans specific to the individual, specific to the individual's lifestyle, and for the relationship with diseases, and to implement these nutrition plans. Dietitian first appeared in the United States in 1899. In our country, the department of dietetics was opened at Hacettepe University in 1962, under the leadership of Prof. Ayşe Baysal who is the doyen and founder of our profession. In fact, dietitian in Türkiye started in 1966 when Hacettepe gave its first graduates, and since then, our profession has undoubtedly become very popular in the process until today."
"There is a lot of information pollution about our profession..."
Pointing out that dietitians are people who can intervene in the whole process that may endanger human health by eliminating nutritional pollution, Arslan stated that "I think according to the data of the Ministry of Health in 2023, the number of dietitians actively working in our country was around 31 thousand. I think this will increase even more in 2024. So, what is dietitian profession? Dietitian is the title given to people who have successfully completed their 4-year education in the Faculty of Health Sciences or Schools of Higher Education Institutions. Unfortunately, today, there is a lot of information pollution about our profession, from unqualified sports instructors to artists and models, to inform the public about nutrition without this training. At this point, we have very important roles. We are very important people who can intervene in this whole process, which can endanger human health by eliminating this nutritional pollution, which is present in public health, public and private sectors, food industry, education processes, that is, in fact, wherever there is food and nutrition. These white coats that you will wear today are the most important representatives of the importance of health and disease processes with the information you receive."
