Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics program organized an event titled "Use of Silicone in the Field of Prosthetics" within the scope of April 30 Prosthetics and Orthotics Day. Expert Orthotist Prosthetist Yasemin Şafak participated in the event as a speaker. Şafak informed on silicone and pointed out that proper cleaning prolongs the life of silicone prosthesis.

The event, which received great attention, was moderated by VSHS Orthopedic Prosthetics and Orthotics Program Head Instructor Kübra Akkalay.

"Proper cleaning prolongs the life of the silicone prosthesis"

Specialist Orthotist Protheist Yasemin Şafak mentioned that proper cleaning prolongs the life of the silicone prosthesis at the seminar and stated that "Silicone is the rehabilitation of prostheses; therefore, the first year is very important. Since prostheses do not contain functionality, training is not required. However, we should inform patients about care and cleaning. Proper cleaning prolongs the life of the silicone prosthesis."

"Silicone material is the most compatible material for human skin"

Şafak underlined that silicones should be made by looking at the patient's past photographs and stated that "Silicone material is the most compatible material with human skin. It is heat resistant and can be colored. It is a material resistant to different disruptive factors. There should be a multidisciplinary approach in silicone prosthesis construction. We must work with surgeons. It should be done according to the patient's past photographs."

"You can swim in the sea with silicone prosthesis"

Talking about the advantages of silicone prostheses, Şafak expressed that "Prostheses are produced individually, they are prepared according to the skin color of the person, nails can be added. Hair and veins can be made. Jewelry can be worn, especially in female patients. It is light, dirt-resistant, and easy to clean. You can swim in the sea with silicone prostheses."

"It is essential to determine the skin color of the patient..."

Talking about the requirements for the use of silicone prostheses, Şafak stated that "Trauma, tumor, vascular diseases, congenital anomalies... Nose, eyes, ears, fingers, etc. are designed according to the patient's lost limb. To make silicone finger prosthesis, a stump length of 1.5 cm is needed. Otherwise, we will make partial hands/feet. It is essential to determine the skin color of the patient. We must determine the base color. With the color measuring device, we can determine how much of the paints we will use."

The event ended with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation and a group photo.
