Experts, who define artificial intelligence that makes our lives easier as well as brings risks as the 'digital atomic bomb of our age', also say that the sound generation and cloning of artificial intelligence creates some concerns about the future of traditional voice actors.

Stating that an artificial intelligence technology that will detect cloned voices can be developed in addition to legal regulations to prevent unofficial artificial intelligence voice cloning, Voice Actor Şaban Özdemir said that "This is labor theft. Legal protection is essential to prevent the unauthorized use of voice actors' voices."

Üsküdar University Corporate Communication Department Media PR Unit Manager and Voice Actor Şaban Özdemir evaluated highly discussed artificial intelligence technologies that can imitate the real human voice.

Artificial intelligence-based applications find their place in all areas of life

Stating that artificial intelligence-based applications have found their place in all areas of life, Özdemir emphasized that it would be correct to define artificial intelligence, which not only makes our lives easier but also brings risks, as the 'digital atomic bomb of our age'. Noting that this impartial technology is used in both good and bad ways, Özdemir expressed that "When we go back 20 years, how many of us could think that technology, which only reads written texts, can not only read these texts, but also pronounce them vividly and impressively. We can easily say that technology in content production on digital-based platforms always surprises and amazes us compared to the previous day. We are always left behind technology, and we have difficulty keeping up with its speed... We can say that we have experienced the same development, change and transformation in the field of sound."

Can texts be transformed into vivid, emotional sounds?

Reminding that there are dozens of artificial intelligence-based voice generator platforms, Özdemir stated that "You can benefit from these various platforms mostly with paid subscriptions or memberships, and you can benefit from the services of reading and voicing written texts. We can see that these platforms are able to transform texts into vivid and emotional audios. These artificial intelligence-based voice generator platforms can also be preferred with multi-language options. Yes, these platforms offer the ability to quickly convert text into high-quality audio with the ability to create instant audio. So much so that it also provides the opportunity to choose alternative sounds from the sound library."

Artificial intelligence-supported sound production is unsettling...

Stating that artificial intelligence-supported voice producers offer a remarkable artificial intelligence tool in production, Şaban Özdemir continued as follows:

"We would not be wrong if we say that the point it has reached is unsettling from time to time. Yes, it is obvious that artificial intelligence is concerned about the production of sound, cloning and replication of the voice, especially professional voice actors who continue their earnings only in this field. On a global scale, because there are thousands of artists who make a living from it.

Even the initiative of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) in recent months had voice artists hit the streets, so to speak. The announcement of a groundbreaking deal with an artificial intelligence audio production studio to produce copies of artists' voices drew a backlash from professional voice artists, who criticized the initiative with actions and strikes."

Artificial intelligence had Zeki Müren sing Parla anthem

Drawing attention to the fact that artificial intelligence-supported unofficial voice producers gain unfair profits by cloning the voices of professional voice artists, Özdemir stated that "Artists who do voiceovers for advertisements, movies, video games and books have also witnessed that their voices are cloned through artificial intelligence and used in various content without their consent. This is labor theft... This is a situation that can be observed in our country as well as on a global scale. It is not just the voice actors... It can be observed that some political leaders are exposed to propaganda by imitating their voices with artificial intelligence technology and making them sing songs and anthems. An example is the popular artist Zeki Müren, who died in 1996. Artificial intelligence has Zeki Müren sing the Parla anthem. As soon as it was shared, it became one of the most shared and watched videos on the platforms, as it will be remembered, as well."

Exploitation of voice actors...

Stating that the synthesis and cloning of sound and its use in every field (book voiceover, podcast, documentaries, dramas...) causes the exploitation of artists and an illegal situation, Şaban Özdemir conveyed a personal experience on this subject with the following sentences:

"A few years ago, a person asked me to do a voiceover of a couple of pages. At the end of the voiceover, he conveyed that my voice would be copied and used in voiceovers in different areas. An audio demo will be taken from me, my voice will be taught, introduced and copied by artificial intelligence technology with deep learning models. Thus, it will then voice each entered text over the defined voice. Of course, I didn't accept that..."

Is a 100% human voice possible?

Özdemir made the following remarks: "Artificial intelligence-based voice generation platforms have not yet been able to capture the real human voice 100 percent naturally, realistically, especially in the context of intonation, emphasis and accent. Texts can turn into human-like voices in seconds, but is it realistic? No, it is not! There is still a mechanical voiceover that is far from an emotional tone..."

Stating that an artificial intelligence-based technology can be developed to detect cloned voices as well as legal regulations to prevent unofficial artificial intelligence voice cloning, Özdemir said that "Legal protection is essential to prevent the unauthorized use of voice artists' voices. This technology that distinguishes the AI voice from the human voice will provide a serious deterrent to frauds."
