Assoc. Prof. Gül Esra Atalay: "We see more women managers in many areas of the press compared to the past"
Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication Journalism Department Head Assoc. Prof. Gül Esra Atalay underlined that women have less opportunities to reach managerial positions than men. Atalay stated that "A man and a woman get a job in the same position. They both have the same characteristics; however, an invisible glass ceiling prevents women from rising while the man continues to rise, and women are much less likely to reach managerial positions than men. Not only these, but the general perspective of the society on women, which stems from being a woman, makes women's business life difficult in this sector as well. This situation creates obstacles for them to reach a certain point as much as a man. Unfortunately, the news and journalism industry are still a very masculine field with its every feature, its language and business habits. Therefore, women in this masculine field spend their struggle for existence by giving much tougher tests. While all this was going on, the place of women in the press sector has of course improved over time. These developments were the result of the struggles of the women's movement and women journalists. Therefore, today we see more women managers in many areas of the press than in the past."
Prof. Birsen Talay Keşoğlu: "The environment of freedom born with the Constitutional Era was one of the events that started the press and journalism life of women"
Beykoz University faculty member Prof. Birsen Talay Keşoğlu indicated that the environment of freedom that emerged with the modern state understanding that developed with the Second Constitutional Era was one of the events that started women's press and journalism life. Keşoğlu stated that "The modernization that came with the Tanzimat Reform Era made the newspaper important and visible because the society needed to receive or impart information. Then the Edict of Reform, the First Constitutional Era and the Second Constitutional Era took place. The modern understanding of the state that developed with the Second Constitutional Era gave rise to equal citizenship rights. However, the environment of freedom that emerged was one of the events that started the press and journalism life of women. Women have learned to present and deal with their own problems, demands and solutions. We understand from the Ottoman women's magazines that women have made demands to gain a place in society and to gain a different status."
Researcher and Writer Serdar Soydan: Suat Derviş is a woman who stands on her own two feet"
Researcher and Writer Serdar Soydan stated that many authors have prepared their unknown works for publication, and traced those who have been overshadowed, forgotten or made them forgotten. Soydan stated that “With the archival work I have carried out, I have published many unknown works of Suat Derviş, who works as a journalist as well as a writer. During her years as a journalist, Suat Derviş was subjected to anti-feminist violence that started with her name, and she faced the struggle of trying to exist through femininity, which started from the moment she was born. Suat Derviş is one of the best examples of a woman who stands on her own feet and has never considered victimization worthy of herself, and who struggles for it, and tries to stand up in the masculine sector."
After the questions of the students were answered, the panel ended with a group photo.
