Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, Visual Communication Design Department held an event titled 'Immersive Experiences: XR Technologies and Art'. The event was attended by Istanbul Bilgi University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Digital Game Design, Asst. Prof. İrem Çoban attended. Within the scope of the event, the concepts of AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality), which form the basis of XR technologies, were discussed in detail. Later, an external stakeholder meeting was held with Çoban, and possible collaborations were discussed at the meeting.

The moderator of the event, which was held at Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication Şehit Duha Beker conference hall, was Prof. And Algül, Head of Visual Communication Design Department.

The basis of XR technologies was discussed

Discussing in detail the concepts of AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality), which form the basis of XR technologies, Asst. Prof. İrem Çoban talked about the widespread process of these technologies. Çoban stated that "Nowadays, film festivals have an XR segment, a category. XR film production or project production is now considered a real industry and considered an artistic category. Therefore, the technology where reality and virtual come together may become the science fiction movies you watch in the future."

People with certain conditions can have a bad experience...

Talking about the reason why XR is not widespread today, Çoban expressed that "These glasses today are not very functional. For example, people with a number of conditions, such as migraines, light sensitivity, headaches, anxiety, claustrophobia or someone with vertigo, can have a bad experience when they wear a headset. Based on my experience, I think that the reason why XR is not widespread today is due to such negative situations."

"You are experiencing the immersive experience by deceiving your brain"

Mentioning that audience participation comes into play in immersive experience, which are new forms of expression, Çoban said that "As a differentiating tool within the change of the perception of space and the form of social-political expression, these were the promises of technology offered to our service. With new forms of narration, XR, audience participation came into play. In this respect, it is very important. You experience the immersive experience by misleading your brain. In fact, you are very aware, you can say, 'I put on a VR glasses, and I am not actually there. I do not experience it,' but despite this, the brain does not react at that moment. It talks about different brain function related events. Therefore, by using the change in the perception of space, new forms of expression can become quite impressive."

At the end of the program, which attracted great attention, A certificate of appreciation was presented to Asst. Prof. İrem Çoban.

An external stakeholder meeting was held with Çoban

After the event, an external stakeholder meeting was held with Asst. Prof. İrem Çoban. At the meeting, plans were made for the participation of students in XR technologies, cooperation in their promotion and the realization of events.
