Participation and Foreign Policy in the Second Century of the Republic were discussed

Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences organized a faculty seminar titled "Participation and Foreign Policy in the Second Century of the Republic". The seminar was moderated by Assoc. Prof. İbrahim Arslan and Assoc. Prof. Merve Özdemirkıran Embel and Asst. Prof. Ali Demir participated as a speaker. In the seminar where the basic dynamics of Turkish foreign policy were evaluated, Türkiye's foreign policy vision was one of the topics that attracted attention.

The seminar, which was also attended by Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak, was held at Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Socrates Hall.

The program was moderated by Assoc. Prof. İbrahim Arslan, Head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations, and Assoc. Prof. Merve Özdemirkıran Embel from the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at Marmara University and Asst. Prof. Ali Demir participated as a speaker.

The seminar attracted great interest from faculty academicians.

The proclamation process of the Republic was touched upon

In his opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Arslan touched upon the proclamation process of the Republic and gave information about the election of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk as the first President.

Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak: "Turkish foreign policy is similar to Maslow's hierarchy of needs"

Üsküdar University Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Prof. Deniz Ülke Kaynak stated that Turkish foreign policy is similar to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The source stated that the country's security and the search for autonomy are among the priority goals in foreign policy. Kaynak stated that the discourses of 'new Türkiye' and 'precious loneliness' point to the aim of self-realization in Türkiye's foreign policy vision.

Asst. Prof. Ali Demir: "One of the most important problems of democracy is conflict of interest"

Üsküdar University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science and International Relations (English), Asst. Prof. Ali Demir touched upon the theory of action developed by Habermas and Aristotle based on the typology of the constitutional state. Comparing liberal and republican understandings, Demir emphasized that the liberal view emphasizes the priority of money and power, while the republican understanding prioritizes relations. He also pointed out that one of the most important problems of democracy is conflict of interests.

Assoc. Prof. Merve Özdemirkıran Embel: "Western-centered political thought is being questioned"

Marmara University, Department of Political Science and Public Administration Assoc. Prof. Merve Özdemirkıran Embel evaluated the basic dynamics of Turkish foreign policy in her speech. She stated that the policy of balance, which is the legacy of the Ottoman Empire, and the principle of 'peace at home, peace in the world', which became evident in the establishment of the Republic, played an important role in shaping Türkiye's foreign policy as a medium-sized power. Stating that the geographical location affects foreign policy, Embel said that the problems between Türkiye and Greece are related to the energy crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean. In her speech, Embel also drew attention to the current norm crisis and stated that Western-centered political thought was questioned.

The event ended with the answers to the questions from the participants.
