Deniz Cartı, Berk Çınar Aydemir and Fuat Kağan Kalaycı from Doğan Cüceloğlu Science High School won the first place in the Science and Technology category in Türkiye's first Science and Ideas Festival, which is held by Üsküdar University in cooperation with the İstanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education. In the project, it was aimed to increase the efficiency of solar cells, and the efficiency of solar cells was increased 4.3 times by contributing to light harvesting with the prepared mechanism.

The projects that ranked at the 9th Science and Ideas Festival (BFF), which Üsküdar University organized for high school students in cooperation with the İstanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education, showed the imaginations of young people.

This year, 416 students from 73 schools across İstanbul applied to the festival, which was held for the 9th time with the motto "Your Idea, Your Invention", with 197 projects in teams. The projects of the students draw attention while the ranking students and their advisors were receiving their awards at the ceremony.

Solar energy, one of the renewable energy sources, is clean and inexhaustible...

In the Science and Technology category, Deniz Cartı, Berk Çınar Aydemir and Fuat Kağan Kalaycı from Doğan Cüceloğlu Science High School won the first place with their project titled "The Effects of the Use of Nanovoltaic Luminescence Effect Nano Graphene Quantum Dot Solution and 7-Mercapto-4-Methylcoumarin on Dye-Sensitive Solar Cells". The students received their awards together with their advisor Yonca Bozkurt.

The need for energy is increasing...

Pointing out that the increasing world population and industrialization constantly increase the need for energy, the project pointed out that the use of fossil fuels has consequences such as global warming and climate change although it meets most of our energy needs, and the increase in energy consumption and the fact that fossil fuels will completely run out in the future increases the importance of the search for new energy sources.

In the project, it was emphasized that solar energy, one of the renewable energy sources, is ideal as it is clean and inexhaustible, and it was pointed out that with the development of nanoscience and nanotechnology, the use of nanostructured materials in solar cells has developed increasingly.

The efficiency of the solar cell has been increased by 4.3 times

In the project of Deniz Cartı, Berk Çınar Aydemir and Fuat Kağan Kalaycı from Doğan Cüceloğlu Science High School, which ranked first, it was aimed to increase the efficiency of solar cells, and the solar cell efficiency was increased 4.3 times by contributing to light harvesting with the prepared mechanism.

They did not throw away the peels, but multiplied the shelf life

In the Science and Technology category, Kudret Hümeyra Kula from Private Okyanus Science and Project High School ranked second with her project titled "Do not throw away peels, multiply shelf life". The students received their awards with their advisor İdil Melis Dinç.

According to the project, which emphasizes that studies on natural films that extend food shelf life have gained importance today, according to the 2019 data of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Total pineapple production in the world is over 30 million tons and an average of 50 percent of pineapple fruit is waste, and pineapple production, which is increasing every year, seriously increases the amount of waste and causes environmental problems.

In this study, it was aimed to extend the shelf life of foods by producing edible film with pineapple peel, which is rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, protein and phenolic compounds. It was also aimed to extend the shelf life of foods preserved by covering them with edible film produced from pineapple peel. If the project is implemented, the shelf life of foods with high added value, environmentally friendly and natural ways will be extended.

With the Disaster Chair project, it was aimed to increase safety in the event of an earthquake

In the Science and Technology category, Emre Dağ and Mehmet Selim Baraçlı from Pertevniyal High School were awarded the third place with their project titled "Disaster chair". The students received their awards together with their advisor Günay Esra Gürbuz.

Pointing out that the most important parts of the human body that need to be protected in earthquakes are the head and neck regions, it was aimed to increase safety in the event of an earthquake with the Disaster Chair project.

In the project, sensors will send a warning signal before an earthquake and enable people to escape to a safe place. Moreover, it is aimed to increase the chance of survival by performing the "collapse-trap-hold" movement during an earthquake thanks to the helmet and backrest systems on the chairs. The project addresses the long- or short-term effects of earthquake tremors and aims to reduce the risk of injury, especially by protecting body parts.

With smart watch technology, it informs the relatives of the patients when a crisis is detected

In the Health Sciences category, Elif İklim Sevim, Beyza Erdem and Süveybe Sena Çetiner from Kağıthane Girls' Anatolian Imam Hatip High School ranked first with their project titled "Seize The Day". The students received their awards together with their advisor Bilge Yılmaz.

With the project called "Seize The Day", which is prepared about epilepsy, which is a common disease in childhood and adolescence, it is aimed to enable epilepsy patients to get rid of epilepsy episodes, which they have difficulty in taking notes in their everyday lives, and at the same time, to inform the relatives of the patients immediately when a crisis is detected through smart watch technology. With the smart watch, the patient is also reminded of the medication times.

Naime Duru Sarıgül from FVM Private Işık High School took the second place in the Health Sciences category with her project titled "Making Alternative Mouthwash from Juniper, Cinnamon and Sage Plants". Sarıgül received her award together with her advisor teacher Gizem Türer.

In the Health Sciences category, the third place was won by Rumeysa Güdük, Ebrar Yabalak and Rabia Alkış, from Kağıthane Girls' Anatolian Imam Hatip High School, with their project titled "Breath of Life". The students received their awards together with their advisor Barış Turan.
