The collapse of the 3-floor building, which killed one person and injured 8 people in Küçükçekmece, İstanbul, brought the issue of occupational health and safety to the agenda again.

Pointing out that buildings should be designed structurally strongly, Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl stated that "There may be a civil engineering error or a situation such as non-compliance with the techniques."

Bingöl expressed that "The building does not suddenly collapse on its own. It should not collapse in an earthquake. Places that have a license to open a business should also be inspected later!"

Üsküdar University Occupational Health and Safety Specialist Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl evaluated the collapse of a 3-floor building that killed one person and injured 8 people in Küçükçekmece, İstanbul.

Buildings need to be structurally strong!

Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl commented on the collapsed building and pointed out that the buildings should be designed structurally strongly and said that "There may be a civil engineering error or non-compliance with the techniques. Even if the techniques were followed, there may have been a problem such as colon cutting. It is not normal for a building to collapse suddenly. Usually, these types of collapses are caused by factors that cause problems in the ground, such as an excavation work or reconstruction in the environment. However, in this case, the building appears to have collapsed on its own. In this case, it is suspicious that the shop below led to the collapse. It is possible that there is another situation here that disrupts the structural integrity.”

Bingöl: "The main problem is ‘the fact that we did not construct the buildings with the appropriate techniques.'"

Stating that the shop on the ground floor of the building may have been a factor in the collapse, Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl said that "However, it is necessary to identify the situation that disrupts the structural integrity. This will be revealed as a result of the examination. The building is not a very old building, it is stated that it was built in 1988. Our main problem is that we did not build the buildings with the appropriate techniques. For this reason, considering that the buildings are weak, we carry out strengthening works and try to build buildings in accordance with the new earthquake regulations. That is why we are in urban transformation. However, it is not normal for a 4-floor building to collapse on its own.”

The average age of a building is about 80 years

Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl said that "The average age of a building is about 80 years," and continued his remarks as follows: "There are buildings from the early periods of the Ottoman period. You see it when you go abroad. There are buildings that are 100, 120 years, 150 years old. They are all standing. He went through war. World War 2, World War 1 World War II. Standing. However, our buildings built in 1985, 1988, 1975 do not collapse on their own, but they collapse when they shake in a small earthquake. When a building is built next to it, it collapses. These show that we do not comply with the technical requirements. The concrete structure of the building, the ground structure, the ground surveys, the column system, all these need to be done properly. We should not forget that we are in an earthquake zone. The image of this building is an alarming situation for us. We need to think about how we will be in any earthquake and take precautions through this building.".

Places that have a license to open a business should also be inspected afterwards

Pointing out that it is not possible for a place to work without a license to open a workplace, Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl noted that the municipality should not give these permits in a place where there is a risk, and that places with a license to open a business should be inspected later. Under normal conditions, when the building is built in accordance with construction techniques, the building should not collapse. The building does not suddenly collapse on its own. It should not collapse in an earthquake. Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl said the columns may have been cut, but there could possibly be other reasons as well.

Reminding that soil surveys are also important, Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl said that "The construction technique of the building is also important. All of these need to be considered together."

Asst. Prof. Nuri Bingöl added that within the framework of urban transformation, it is necessary to build buildings that will no longer be demolished.
