"Child Neglect and Abuse Symposium" was held

Speaking at the symposium, President of Üsküdar University psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan expressed that "This issue is a bleeding wound. Look. It's like a secret that everyone knows. Everyone knows. It is in a lot of places.”

Prof. Tarhan: "Neglect and abuse in childhood have a negative impact on the mental health of the society in advanced age."

Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. A. Aktuğ Ertekin pointed out that child neglect and abuse have existed in all kinds of societies since the past and stated that "There is no concept that it is less common in developed societies. It won't happen to my child.'"

The "Child Neglect and Abuse Symposium – Larva Film Screening and Interview" organized by Üsküdar University with the contributions of the Early Childhood Development Working Group was held at the Central Campus Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall.

The opening speeches of the symposium were made by President of Üsküdar University Prof. Nevzat Tarhan and Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. A. Aktuğ Ertekin.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "It is like a secret that everyone knows"

In the program with intense participation, President of Üsküdar University Prof. Nevzat Tarhan reminded that in 2010, a joint study was carried out with the Governorship of İstanbul on this issue in the past and stated that "This issue is a bleeding wound. Look. It is like a secret that everyone knows. Everyone knows. It is in a lot of places.”

Stating that this issue is known by psychiatrists and psychologists working in the field, Tarhan said that "We now scale childhood traumas for every case. We see that childhood trauma is behind many advanced diseases. Traumas are forgotten and then appear in the form of diseases."

Explaining that in one case, it was found that incest trauma was behind the obesity of a girl who weighed 130 kilograms, Tarhan stated that it was seen that the person constantly blamed themselves due to the incest trauma and ate constantly, saying 'I must be ugly, I should eat all the time with the thought that I do not deserve beauty'.

Body privacy should be explained

Noting that children should be told about body privacy in the family, Prof. Tarhan expressed that "Neglect and abuse in childhood have a negative effect on the mental health of the society at an advanced age."

Reminding that the main thing in medicine is the protection of health, Prof. Tarhan said that there is an understanding of medicine for the treatment of the disease, and that the important thing is to protect health.

Pointing to child health and development, Prof. Tarhan noted that a child born with their own identity creates their own identity by interacting with parents and other objects as they grows.

Emphasizing the importance of taking care of children, Prof. Tarhan stated that the lives of children who were taken care of in the past continue their lives normally.

Stating that the person who works only for themselves is malicious, Tarhan also emphasized the importance of contributing to the society.

Prof. A. Aktuğ Ertekin: "We should not say 'Not to my child'"

Within the scope of the opening speeches, Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. A. Aktuğ Ertekin pointed out that child neglect and abuse have existed in all kinds of societies since the past and said, "There is no concept that it is less common in developed societies. It won't happen to my child.'"

Pointing out that the most important phenomenon about child neglect and abuse is awareness, Ertekin said, "Education is one of the most important solutions. The subject of abuse used to be physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. Now, economic and digital exploitation has been added to this.”

Stating that the World Health Organization (WHO) says that 1 out of every 4 people was abused in childhood, Ertekin said that the World Health Organization (WHO) says that one out of every 5 women and one out of every 13 adults in men around the world were sexually abused as children, and that more than 40 thousand children under the age of 15 die every year due to neglect and abuse.

Larva Film Screening was held

Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Social Work faculty member Prof. Abdullah Karatay made a presentation titled "Child Neglect and Abuse & Its Situation in Türkiye", and Üsküdar University Child Development Department Head Prof. Nurper Ülküer made a presentation titled "The Role of Parental Support Programs in the Prevention of Child Neglect and Abuse". After the speech titled "The Mass Impact of Short Films" by Head of the Department of New Media and Communication Assoc. Prof. Yıldız Derya Birincioğlu Vural, a conversation was held by Larva Film Screening and Üsküdar University Child Development Department / Larva Film Script Consultant RA Begüm Gamış Çiftci and Larva Film Director Volkan Güney Eker.
