Prof. Nazife Güngör: "We have been giving this award for 9 years"

Making the opening speech of the ceremony, Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Nazife Güngör stated that "Today, we will present awards to our esteemed guests who are among us for touching humanity, adding value to humanity and society, and being model people. We have been giving such an award for 9 years because Üsküdar University knows that the mission of universities is not only to produce education or science, but also to touch some sensitivities of the society."

Prof. Nazife Güngör also stated that one of the most important issues that make up the agenda of today's people is the loss of value and human value and said that "When did humanity start to meet money and began to understand that money could give it power, it started to move away from itself while directing its mind and emotions to money. A confusion of ends and means ensued. It replaced the end with the means, so humanity began to lose value in some way."

Prof. Tarhan: "There is an epidemic of selfishness and narcissism in the world"

In his opening speech, President of Üsküdar University Prof. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out the importance of emphasizing values and stated that technology is developing very rapidly, that this development does not go parallel to the psychological health of humanity, and that people's happiness rate and psychological health rates go against it.

Pointing out that drug use and suicides have increased due to the erosion of values all over the world, Prof. Tarhan said that depression, unhappiness and divorce have also increased, and that there is an epidemic of selfishness and narcissism in the world.

"A type of person who works only for his own benefit is glorified in the world"

Prof. Tarhan said that "A type of person who works only for their own benefit has started to be glorified in the world," and Tarhan noted that in the competition brought by modernism, the type of person who works only for themselves and works for their own benefit is presented as the ideal type, and the negative consequences of this have begun to be seen.

Stating that some values, which are the accumulation of humanity, are put on the back burner, Prof. Tarhan stated that there are value judgments in every person's life.

"Teaching people their right values instead of their wrong value judgments"

Prof. Tarhan said that "In psychology, we used to define human beings as emotions, thoughts and behaviors. In recent years, values have been added to this. Third generation psychotherapies began. In these therapies, psychological resilience trainings have started to be used to teach people their correct values instead of wrong value judgments."

Noting that it is a responsibility to explain the value judgments that have been formed for centuries to young people, Prof. Tarhan explained that role models are very important in the transfer of value.

Prof. Tarhan also stated that awards are presented to people who are role models for the society and reminded that in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, self-transcendence is seen as the highest value.

"If a person works only for themselves, that is enough to be malicious"

Tarhan continued his speech and emphasized the importance of psychological resilience and values education: "If a person works only for themselves, that is enough to be malicious. They cannot empathize. They cannot establish a close relationship, experience and become lonely. The type of person who works only for their own interests is the biggest cause of loneliness. Such people have multiplied. It is not enough to realize oneself. If a person is not useful to society, if they do not contribute anything to humanity, if they do not go at the end of their life with more pluses, if they do not complete their mission in the world, and if such people increase, humanity will deteriorate."

Noting that there are 24-character strengths and 6 virtues, Prof. Tarhan explained that these are universal accumulations, and that they are information taken from eastern wisdom and Anatolian wisdom and Mevlana.

"In fact, there is no such thing as evil, there is no goodness"

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "If the goodness in the world does not increase, the world is getting worse. There is an entropic relationship between good and evil. How to get cold if the temperature does not rise. In fact, there is no such thing as coldness. There is an absence of heat. In fact, there is no such thing as darkness. There was a lack of light. In fact, there is no such thing as evil. There is a lack of goodness.”

Noting that they prepared a 19-module book called The Science of Happiness from Üsküdar University Press with a 5-year study, Prof. Tarhan said that this is the 9th anniversary of values education. He stated that it should be explained with scientific methodology at the grade level.
