Stating that strong storms will adversely affect those who are not prepared for adverse weather conditions, experts warned citizens by listing the precautions to be taken before, during and after the storm.

Reminding that flowerpots or all kinds of items in areas such as balconies and terraces that can fly should be removed or fixed before the storm, Emergency Aid and Disaster Management Specialist Dr. Ayşe Aydemir Yıldırım emphasized that it is necessary to be prepared to shut off valves such as electricity, water, and natural gas.

Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Emergency and Disaster Management Program Head Dr. Ayşe Aydemir Yıldırım informed about individual protection against storms.

It is important to know the precautions we will take before the storms and what to do during and after the storm

Stating that storms that occur with strong winds and are accompanied by precipitation such as snow and rain can cause serious damage, Ayşe Aydemir Yıldırım said that "It is important to know the precautions we will take before this natural event, which we can consider as an emergency, and what to do during and after the storm."

Flowerpots on balconies and terraces, all kinds of items that can fly should be removed or fixed

Yıldırım listed the things to do before the storm as follows:

"Meteorological warnings should be followed by broadcasting organizations such as television, radio, etc. The most important point here is to follow and pay attention the warnings. After the warnings are announced, you should never go out unless necessary. Stay away from the coastal area. Flowerpots in areas such as balconies and terraces, and all kinds of items that can fly should be removed or fixed. Doors, windows, and shutters should be closed, and wind entry should be prevented. Vehicles should be parked in closed garages if possible, and it should be removed from places where there is a possibility of collapse or falling parts, such as buildings, trees, walls. A disaster first aid kit should be taken with you."

We should walk away from places such as trees, electricity poles, mosque minarets

Yıldırım also gave the following information about what to do during the storm: "Everyone should calmly wait in their homes or closed areas for their safety. In case of going out, we should walk away from places such as buildings, trees, electricity poles, mosque minarets. If damage has occurred during a storm, do not go out to repair the damage. You must wait until the storm ceases. Doors should be closed when entering buildings.

Pay attention to the use of stoves!

In case of experiencing the storm during driving on the road is, pay attention to structures such as bridges and viaducts. If possible, alternative ways should be used. When a storm occurs, any outdoor work should be canceled. Hanged goods and loads should not be kept, crane works should be stopped. When necessary, one should be prepared to shut off the valves of the building such as electricity, water, and natural gas. Carbon monoxide poisoning occurs due to the use of stoves, especially in stormy weather. Therefore, pay attention to the use of stoves."

Yıldırım listed the following information about what to do after the storm:

"Electrical cables that have fallen to the ground or are still hanging should not be touched. Do not walk close to walls, buildings, and trees that you are not sure of their safety. Damage may occur later. Damage to the structure should be detected safely and damaged areas should not be entered without security. With these precautions, we can protect ourselves and our loved ones against storms."
