President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan gave the opening lecture of the orientation program under the title of "The Secrets of Being a Good Physician" and drew attention to the importance of communication in health. Stating that 66% of the failure in the studies conducted at Harvard in the USA was caused by communication accidents, Tarhan emphasized that the success of medicine increases when communication errors are few.

Within the scope of the program held in the İbni Sina Auditorium, 5th year medical students were informed. The opening speeches of the program were made by Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine Prof. Haydar Sur and Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology and 5th Semester Coordinator Prof. İsmet Teoman Benli. Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Arif Aktuğ Ertekin and the academicians of the department also attended the event.

Within the scope of the program, President of Üsküdar University Prof. Nevzat Tarhan addressed the students in the opening lecture.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "In fact, every physician is a candidate for leadership"

Delivering a speech titled "The Secrets of Being a Good Physician", Prof. Nevzat Tarhan gave important advice to 5th year students. Tarhan stated that "In fact, every physician is a candidate for leadership. Those who can manage themselves can actually manage their relationships. One can easily manage their patient if they have learned to manage themselves. They manage their relationships. They manage their private life. They manage their social life. In other words, the social and emotional skills that we try to learn in schools are self-management skills. Then, it comes to the skill of relationship management.”

“66% of failures are due to communication accidents"

Pointing out that compliance with scientific and ethical standards is important for being a good physician, Tarhan said; "In studies conducted at Harvard, USA, 66% of failure is due to communication accidents. Here, communication with the third place in communication with teamwork is important. If these communications are healthy, there are fewer errors. When communication errors are few, the success of medicine increases. Such a very successful person makes a very simple mistake. His career is turned upside down. That's why you need to pay attention to whether it complies with these scientific standards or ethical standards in every job."

"Anyone who cannot be happy to help cannot be a physician"

Drawing attention to the characteristics that should be in people who want to be a physician, Tarhan stated that "For a physician, the best interests of the patient are important. If someone who wants to be a physician does not want to help people and to do good, we say you should not be a doctor because they cannot. If they did and if they are accepted, then let them go into the laboratory and so on. In other words, I think that anyone who fails to do good to the patient and be happy to help cannot be a physician. Even if you say you cannot do it, I recommend that you choose an area that does not come into contact with the patient."

First human competence, then professional competence...

Underlining the importance of considering the best interests of the patient in medicine, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that "Human competence come first and then professional competence comes. If you always consider yourself first, you will be alone. The first step is to establish an alliance in the treatment of the patient if health professionals work together to ensure the well-being of the patient. The leader of the alliance is the health worker. The leader of the treatment relationship here is the physician in the treatment identity. In other words, the therapeutic relationship starts from the first consultation of the healthcare worker and the patient. The understanding here is formed by today's good physician."

Prof. Hikmet Koçak: "What you will learn is the master-apprentice relationship"

Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak emphasized the title of "Issues to be Considered in Clinical Practices". Koçak stated that "Not everything is written in the book. You read what is written, and you see it, but what you will learn is within the master-apprentice relationship. You will learn the art aspect from our professors. You will learn the behavior aspect. You will also learn how you are seen from the patient's eyes rather than your eyes. To you, it is a very simple event. Maybe an injury, a scratch on the skull, but since there is a lot of bleeding, it means a great loss of blood in the eyes of the patient. You think of a slight abrasion, but the patient does not see it that way. The patient's relatives do not see it that way either. Thus, you will see the psychology of the patient, what the patient and their relatives expect, and you need to understand by empathizing with them."

Prof. Haydar Sur: "When you leave a gap, you do not know where the physician will give away a goal"

Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Haydar Sur gave advice to medical students and expressed that students should not make the mistake of thinking that physical health is more important than mental health throughout their lives. Sur stated that "Psychosomatic diseases are much more common than people think. Psychological incompatibilities and environmental incompatibilities lie at the root of many of the situations that cause bodily malfunctions. Therefore, mental health is at least as important as physical health. First of all, we should underline this. The wall of reason, the wall of consciousness, and the wall of logic. There will be no missing building blocks from that wall of consciousness; therefore, every one-week internship we go to, or two-month internships, all of these are equally important to me. When you leave a gap, you do not know where the physician will give away a goal."

Prof. İsmet Teoman Benli: "The semester consists of small internships built on basic branches"

Faculty of Medicine 5th Semester Coordinator Prof. İsmet Teoman Benli informed the students about "5th Semester Internships, General Guide and Internship Guides, Internship Programs, Internship Report Cards, Internship Places and Exams". Benli stated that "The semester consists of short internships that are built on core majors."

After the question and answer session, the event ended with a group photo shoot.
