Noting that when choosing a profession or being included in the preference list, information should be obtained from different sources or experts and a choice should be made by taking into account the personality compatibility of the profession, experts say that vocational guidance inventories, career tests, and the teachers of the departments to be studied at universities help in this process.

Üsküdar University Director of Educational Institutions and Guidance Services Ertuğrul Tut gave advice to the students who take the exam on choosing a profession before the preference period and expressed that "During the selection process, the profession promotion days, fairs and career days of the universities are very important to eliminate the question marks in the minds about the professions."

The results of the 2024 Higher Education Institutions Exam will be announced on Wednesday, July 17, according to the announced calendar. Director of Educational Institutions and Guidance Services Ertuğrul Tut gave advice to the students who took the exam about choosing a profession before the preference period.

Which profession should I choose?

Pointing out that the most important question in the minds of university candidates right now is 'Which profession should I choose?', Tut stated that "There are too many external factors that will bombard the candidates with information in this process. The excess of external factors sometimes negatively affects the motivation to choose a profession. Instead of the department that has been dreamed of for years, it is possible to turn to different professions with the mind that is contradictory. In this process, there may be unhappiness in professional life and many problems that will come with it in the future."

Episodes and programs added to the list without research can cause regret

Stating that the programs that are included in the list without being in mind or researched, especially during the preference period, can cause regret later, Guidance Services Manager Ertuğrul Tut said that "When choosing a profession or being included in the list, it is necessary to get information from different sources or experts, and students should choose their department by considering the personality compatibility of the profession. Therefore, vocational orientation inventories, career tests, and the professors of the departments to be studied at universities help in this process. Especially in recent years, the polishing of some professions on social media creates a simulation that everyone who graduates from that department will achieve the same success, and great disappointment can be experienced when graduation. In fact, it is necessary to get information from the right source when researching the profession and passed through a personality filter."

Career promotion days, fairs and career days are useful

Tut said that "During the preference process, universities' career promotion days, fairs and career days are very important to eliminate any question marks on the students’ mind about professions," and Tut expressed that collecting and comparing information from different places will ensure a healthier result of the process. Pointing out that academic success and professional success are processes that complement each other, Ertuğrul Tut stated that "Having academic success will also increase professional alternatives. Taking the first step correctly in the profession selection process will create a domino effect. Academic success will also bring happiness and professional success. However, the most crucial part here will be to get the education of the profession that is suitable for us and that we will be happy with. Another secret of professional success is to create alternatives for the profession to be performed. The factor that will ensure this is a proper academic education."

Families project their dreams on their children

Emphasizing that another issue that should be considered in the selection process is that families want to realize their dreams through their children, Tut stated that "In this process, it is very important to guide the candidate who will choose a profession by considering their thoughts, personality structure and opinions. In fact, it will be very positive for the candidates to reveal their positive and negative feedback in accordance with their personality related to the professions they are in a dilemma in this process, if necessary, by writing, and to manage this process by getting to know themselves."
