Prof. Nevzat Tarhan gave valuable advice to future doctors



Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine, which received its first students this year, started the 2019-2020 academic year with a ceremony. Üsküdar University Founding President Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, Yaşar Aydın - Vice Chairman of Memorial Health Group and Uğur Genç - CEO of Memorial Health Group attended the ceremony in which academic upgrade hooding ceremony was also held. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that they aim to provide medical education with high quality and robust infrastructure as a university and that medical profession is not only profession. Indicating that change and suffering is a part of development, Prof. Tarhan emphasized the importance of critical thinking, questioning and emphasized the importance of cooperation, teamwork and communication. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan advised future doctors to dream.

Üsküdar University Founding President Prof. Nevzat Tarhan provided an opening speech at the ceremony which was held at Üsküdar University Main Campus Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall. Prof. Tarhan remarked that Üsküdar University, which was established in 2011 and received its first students in 2012, provides education to more than 20 thousand students in 5 faculties and a vocational school of health sciences.



Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “We aimed to provide high quality medical education with strong infrastructure”

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan remarked that medical school is an important step as they are a thematic university in the fields of behavioral sciences and health. He also shared that they are working to provide a strong and high quality medical education and that they have established standards above average. Üsküdar University received its first medical students in 2019-2020 academic year. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that they have started this journey along with NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital and Memorial Health Group in cooperation.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “The medical profession is not only a profession, but an art.”

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that the medical profession is not only a profession but an art. He gave recommendations to medical students as a “senior companion”. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out the importance of 21st century skills for capturing the future and underlined the fact that his students will work hard to achieve these skills.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “Changing and suffering is part of development.”

Prof. Tarhan said that 21st century skills aim not only to meet today's needs, but to meet the needs of the future. He said, “If there is an understanding that understands the needs of the future, one can develop and progress accordingly. Changing and developing are sometimes painful and difficult. Medical students have to work almost 24 hours. You will aspire to the difficult occasions and you will suffer but in this way one can improve. One can face the current challenges by considering benefit for the future. For this reason, endurance training is one of the trainings of positive psychology.”



Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: Knowledge is permanent in learning by experience.”

Prof. Tarhan noted that one of the 21st century skills is learning by experience. He continued as, “Theoretical knowledge is forgotten, whereas learning through experience cannot be forgotten. Our five senses, like sight and hearing, are not enough for the reflection of permanent knowledge in our memory. Intuition and emotions also need to step in. Then the information becomes permanent. We, as the university, tried to do this. We tried to implement the Hybrid Management and Training System. Instead of the traditional classical system, we aimed to apply the application from the first year. We wanted our medical students to learn by experience.”

Importance of cooperation, communication and dreaming was emphasized

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stressed the importance of critical thinking and questioning and advised his students to ask many questions and be curious. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that they adopted the philosophy of learning organization as a university along with the students and teachers. He also emphasized the importance of cooperation, teamwork and communication. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan advised doctor candidates to build their networks and that they should have a strong imagination.



Prof. Haydar Sur: “You will be shaped by hundreds of years of experience.”

Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Haydar Sur said that they had gone through a difficult path while establishing medical school and that their cooperation with Memorial Group was important. He thanked Üsküdar University Founding President Prof. Nevzat Tarhan and the academicians. Prof. Haydar Sur said “You are new and the faculty is new but you will be trained here with hundreds of years of academic staff experience.”



Memorial Healthcare Group CEO Uğur Genç: “Work a lot and make a difference”

Memorial Group CEO Uğur Genç stated in his speech that they attach great importance to this cooperation. He continued as, “We set out on this journey to add value to you and to train good physicians. Work a lot and make a difference. Noone can succeed without working hard. Don’t be ordinary.”



Prof. Nevzat Tarhan presented a sculpture of Feeler to Yaşar Aydın, the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Memorial Health Group Yaşar Aydın expressed their satisfaction with the cooperation also.



Prof. Nevzat Tarhan gave the first lecture

Founding President Prof. Nevzat Tarhan gave the first lecture on “Definition of Positive Psychology and Basic Concepts”. Prof. Tarhan stated that positive psychology is an area that helps individuals from birth to death to connect to life and take life to a more positive point. He also informed that positive psychology, which emerged at the beginning of the 2000s, is also called the science of happiness and is considered a tool to achieve happiness.
