The First International and the Second National Health Service Associated Infections Congress was held, which was hosted by Üsküdar University in cooperation with the International Sterilization Surgical Infection Nurses Association (USCEHDER) and NPİSTANBUL Hospital. The theme of this year's three-day congress was determined as 'Blast the wind of change'.
The First International and the Second National Health Service Associated Infections Congress was held at the Üsküdar University NP Health Campus Ibn-i Sina Auditorium.
The theme of the congress, which was organized with the contributions of USCEHDER and NPİSTANBUL Hospital, was determined as 'Blast the wind of change'.
The congress, which lasted for three days, was held with international participation this year.
The opening speeches of the congress were made by USCEHDER Chairman of the Board of Directors and Congress President Muhdedir Caner, Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Arif Aktuğ Ertekin and Head of Nursing Department Prof. Selma Doğan.
Muhdedir Caner: "We put our finger on the key points of the field"
Stating that infections have a great impact today, USCEHDER Chairman of the Board Muhdedir Caner said: "Healthcare-related infections are among the factors that directly affect the quality of patient care and service quality in hospitals today. When we established our association, we established an association with our friends under this roof, including surgery on one side and the operating room on the other, sterilization on the other and infection control on the other. We put our finger on the key points of the field. When deciding on a scientific activity, we conduct very serious surveys in the field. What do our colleagues want? If there is a problem in the field, they want to be told and listened to. We have not ignored this in our scientific activities so far. I hope that this congress will be productive. When we return to the field from here, I believe that if there is a faulty application, actions will be taken to return that application from what is said here. If such an action takes place, our scientific activity will gain real meaning."
Prof. Selma Doğan: "Nurses in the health system constitute more than half of the system all over the world"
Stating that infection plays a role in patients receiving additional treatment in the hospital, Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Head of Nursing Department Prof. Selma Doğan said that "As it is known, healthcare-associated infections are a very important and current issue, and despite all kinds of precautions taken, it is an important issue that always be on the agenda as a problem. It causes high hospitalizations, prolonged hospitalizations, and additional treatments for the patient. In this context, the costs are very high. I would like to thank you for organizing a meeting on this issue. Statistically, it is stated that healthcare-associated infections increase by 15-16 percent in the general population among other infections, and up to 25 percent in intensive care units. Of course, healthcare-associated infections are preventable. We know that these problems need to be systematically addressed. In the health system, nurses constitute more than half of the system all over the world, and nearly half of them in our country are nurses. Especially in inpatient units, nurses have great responsibilities due to their intense direct contact with patients. That's why I think we cannot work hard enough on this issue."
Prof. Arif Aktuğ Ertekin: "It should be trained, supervised and controlled"
Emphasizing how effective even hand washing is in infection, Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Dean Prof. Arif Aktuğ Ertekin stated that "I wish there would be no health-related infections, there is no such concept. If there is work somewhere, there will definitely be problems there. The important thing here is to pay attention to the distinction between complication and malpractice. No matter how much we pay attention, no matter how much care we take, there will be undesirable situations that will arise. Minimizing these should be our main goal within today's knowledge. We should not slip into situations that arise from a lack of care and knowledge. We generally see health-related diseases in 3 groups: Some of them are groups admitted to the emergency department, some of them are internal infections, and some of them are surgical infections. We have a lot of trouble with infection, especially in emergency interventions. I believe that preventing this is also a culture. We know how important a very simple hand wash is. It is not easy to acquire this habit, and I believe in continuity here. It must be trained, supervised and controlled. I believe that when we do these, such problems will be less."
The speakers at this year's congress made their presentations under the following titles: "Healthcare-Associated Infections", "Pressure Wounds and Infection Control", "National Infection Control Measure Packages", "Infection Control Measures in Special Units", "Operating Room Nursing and Infection Control", "Intensive Care Nursing and Infection Control", "Infection Control in Hospital Support Services", "Infection Control in Oral and Dental Health Centers", "Sterilization and Disinfection Practices", "Patient Safety", "Technology and Infection Control" and "Disasters and Management".
After the presentations, the congress ended with the presentation of a plaque and a group photo.
