Prof. Sinan Canan: “If you have dreams, each department will be like a surfboard for you”

Prof. Sinan Canan shared his experiences with prospective students and their families. Prof. Canan remarked that a diploma alone will not give individuals their dreams. He continued as, “If you have dreams, each department is like a surfboard for you. You ride on top of that undulating stream of life, with its energy you go to places you never expected.”



“How come we're afraid of artificial intelligence?”

Prof. Sinan Canan addressed prospective students in his speech and said: “People have been standing barefoot for two hundred and fifty thousand years with nothing, no technology. This tells us something. Mankind is a creature designed to solve impossible problems and who knows what kind of struggles were faced. The reason we are here today is that this weak and naked creature is capable of finding great solutions.”

Prof. Canan stated that artificial intelligence is one of the most worried issues in the world. He said, “We're scared whether the robots will take our place in near future. We forgot what we are. We don't really use our brain with the hardware, it's given in nature. Because we were born into a ready system.”

“We don't have the guts to imagine the future”

Prof. Sinan Canan continued as, “We cannot think that we will be doing this professions in thirty years. The dream means to see myself in a hut with a beautiful garden on top of a mountain. Human has superpowers that other living things do not possess. This is the ability to imagine and create superpowers. But since everything is ready for us, we do not produce easily. We do not write science fiction in Turkey because we do not dare to imagine the future. And if you don't imagine the future, you won't make it. Even worse there will live the dreams of others. You will try to survive in the civilizations created by others. You will think that life consists of ten to fifteen options.”

Prof. Sinan Canan said he described his profession as a popular science narrator. He said, “A diploma doesn't give people their dreams. If you have dreams, each department will be like a surfboard for you. You ride on top of that undulating stream of life, with its energy you go to places you never expected.”



After the meeting, Prof. Sinan Canan answered prospective students’ questions and signed his books.
