Yunus Nadi ABALIOĞLU

He is the founder of Cumhuriyet newspaper, a Turkish journalist, and politician. He was born in 1879 in Seydiler Village in Fethiye. After completing his primary education in Fethiye, he continued his education at the Süleymaniye Madrasa in Rhodes. At this school, he learned Arabic, Persian and French. He continued his education at İstanbul Sultani and İstanbul Law School. He started his journalism profession by writing articles in the newspaper Malumat during his student years and continued his life by publishing the Yeni Gün newspaper and then the Cumhuriyet newspaper. He worked for İkdam and Tasvir-i Efkar newspapers. He became the editor-in-chief of the Rumeli newspaper, a publication published in Thessaloniki. He was one of the founders of the Communist Party of Türkiye, which was founded on October 18, 1920. In addition to his journalism, he served as a member of parliament in the Ottoman Parliament and as a deputy in the Turkish Grand National Assembly for six terms. In 1924, he founded the newspaper Cumhuriyet. He was the editor-in-chief of the Cumhuriyet until 1936. He died in Geneva on June 28, 1945. In memory of Yunus Nadi Abalıoğlu, awards are given every year in the fields of stories, novels, poems, cartoons, and social sciences.
