He is an American Neurologist, Psychiatrist, and Internal Medicine Specialist. He received a bachelor's degree with honors and medical degrees from Chicago and Northwestern University. Stahl holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology and physiology from the University of Chicago and is specialized in the field internal medicine at the University of Chicago, neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, and psychiatry at Stanford University. He is a professor at Stanford University, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), London Institute of Psychiatry and London Institute of Neurology, the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and an honorary visiting senior fellow in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, UK. Stahl, who has served as a director and editor in many important journals, is also on the editorial boards of many reputable journals, especially the Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology.
He has published more than 500 scientific articles and book chapters, 33 books and over 1600 scientific presentations and abstracts. A Distinguished Life Member of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Professor Stahl has also served on numerous medical and scientific advisory boards for the pharmaceutical industry, the biotechnology and medical information industry, and various public service organizations. He also has an active clinical practice experience, specializing in the psychopharmacological treatment of refractory cases. Prof. Dr. Stephen Michael Stahl has been awarded the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP) Lundbeck Foundation Award for his contributions to postgraduate education in psychiatry and neurology. His books have been awarded the British Medical Association's book of the year award and Arbor Scientia has been awarded the business of the year award by the local chamber of commerce. He is also the recipient of the Society of Biological Psychiatry A.E. Bennett Award, the APA/San Diego Psychiatric Society Education Award, the UCSD psychiatry residency teacher award, and the APA's Distinguished Psychiatrist Awards. With the decision taken by Üsküdar University in 2018, he was awarded the title of Honorary Doctorate.
