Semiha ES 1912-2012
She is Türkiye's first female travel and war photographer.
She was born in 1912 and received a good education. At the age of 15, she started working as a switchboard clerk in the French telephone administration. In those days, she met and married the famous journalist Hikmet Feridun Es. Feridun Es, who worked as an overseas correspondent, started to travel abroad with Semiha Es. In this way, Semiha Es learned to take photographs after a while. She worked as a professional photojournalist alongside her husband. Semiha Es started to photograph Feridun Es's articles in the newspaper. For this reason, they made a lot of trips together.
Feridun-Semiha Es couple was assigned to Korea by Hürriyet newspaper to cover the war.
They conveyed the events of the war to Türkiye through the newspaper Hürriyet. Semiha Es worked as a travel and war correspondent for nearly 50 years.
In 2011, she was awarded the Honorary Award at the Turkish Photographer Awards. She died at the age of 100 at her home in İstanbul. Her body was buried next to her husband Hikmet Feridun Es in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
