Gazi YAŞARGİL

Prof. Gazi Yaşargil completed his medical education in Turkey. He received his neurosurgical specialty in the same institution. After working in the University of Bern Department of Psychiatry, he went towards the field of neurosurgery. Yaşargil continued his studies in the field of brain anatomy and general surgery. In 1953, he started to work in the neurosurgery department of Basel University. He worked at the University Hospital in Zurich between 1957 and 1965. In 1965, Prof. Yaşargil became an assistant professor and he worked as a professor at the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Vermont, Burlington, USA between 1965 and 1967. He conducted studies in the field of microvascular surgery with Prof. Peardon Donaghy. After completing his studies, he returned to Zurich and performed his first brain bypass on 30 October 1967 using a surgical microscope. Given his success, Prof. Yaşargil became well known in the world of neurosurgery and he found the equipment used in the field of surgery insufficient. Therefore, he entered into new searches in this field. At the end of his studies, he made important contributions to the surgical field such as floating microscope and angiography. The microscope used in brain surgeries has taken a very important role in the removal of aneurysms and has revolutionized this field. In 1973, he became a professor and Department Head of Neurosurgery at the University of Zurich. He was named “Man of the Century” by the American Neurosurgeon Association.
