Ahmet Ihsan TOKGÖZ 1868-1942

He is a Turkish bureaucrat, politician, journalist, writer, translator, and sports administrator. He was born in Erzurum in 1868. He studied at the Mülkiye Mektebi. He published the magazines Şafak in 1886 and Ümran in 1889.

He worked as a translator for foreign news and telegraph news in Malumat and Servet newspapers. The most important contribution of the artist to our cultural life is his translations. He was the first person to introduce Jules Verne to Turkish society with his translations. In 1891, he founded the Âlem Printing House. In 1892, he published the magazine Servet-i Fünun. In terms of journal publishing, he pioneered publications on positive sciences and contemporary civilization concepts such as rights, law, human and freedom of thought.

He contributed to the education of many literary figures from Tevfik Fikret to Oktay Akbal. With his memoirs, he became a source for general history, press and literary histories. Ahmet İhsan Tokgöz, who also worked as a football and sportswriter for a while, became the first president of the Turkish National Olympic Committee. Moreover, he worked as a Translator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Translation Chamber, Translator at Tophane Ministry, owner of Uyanış magazine, Geography Teacher at the Yüksek Ticaret Mektebi. He served as the Municipality Manager of the  6th Department, the Founder and President of the Pierre Loti Association, the Director of the Press Office established for the Lausanne Peace Conference, the member of the Hilal-i Ahmer, Himaye-i Etfal Society, Turkish Aeronautical Association Associations, and a deputy of the Army for three terms.

He has works named Matbuat Hatıralarım, Avrupa’da Ne Gördüm, Haver, Ülfet, and Haraşo. He died in 1942.
