IV International Sufi Studies Summer School Begins…

IV International Sufi Studies Summer School organized by Üsküdar University Institute for Sufi Studies will be held on 20-28 July 2022. Sufi Corner and Kerim Foundation will support the summer school program that will offer face-to-face or online participation. World-renowned professors and experts from abroad, Carl W. Ernst, James Morris, Mohammed Rustom, Bruce Lawrence, Miriam Cookee and Stephen Hirtenstein will also lecture at the summer school.


In the summer school to be held by Üsküdar University Institute for Sufi Studies between 20-28 July 2022, experts from Üsküdar University Institute for Sufi Studies and experts from abroad will give lectures.

Ernst of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, “Methods in Sufi Studies and Quotations and Allusions in Sufi Texts: The Case of Omar ibn Said”; Mohammed Rustom, Professor of Religious Studies at Carleton University, "The Essence of Truth according to Aynü'l-Kudat: A Defense to the Philosophy of Sufism"; Duke University Religious Studies Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Distinguished Professor of Humanities Bruce B. Lawrence, “The Logic of Isthmus in Sufism: Architectural Wonders from Ottoman Turkey to Contemporary Iran”, Duke University Prof. Dr. miriam cooke Kitâbü'l-Vecd ve't-Tevâcüd, Prof. from Kyoto University. Dr. Yasushi Tonaga “Sufistic Studies in Japan” and Stephen Hirtenstein from the Oxford Ibn Arabi Society “The Book of Books: Approaching Ibn Arabi's Index as an Educational Sufi Work”.

Experts and researchers from Üsküdar University will attend

In the summer school, Prof. Emine Yeniterzi from Üsküdar University Institute for Sufi Studies will give lecture on "The Mazmun in Sufi Turkish Literature", Prof. Reşat Öngören will give lecture on "Sources of Ottoman Sufi Thought" and also the Director General of IRCICA Prof.  Mahmud Erol Kılıç will give lecture on “Ibn Arabi's Ottoman Followers”.

Üsküdar University Advisor to Rector will give lecture on “Cemalnur Sargut Edeb: Moral Principles”, Asst. Prof. Cangüzel Güner Zülfikar "Method and Approach in Sufi Studies", Asst. Prof. Dilek Güldütuna “The Concept of Motherhood in Sufism and Sâmiha Ayverdi”, Asst. Prof. Omneya Ayad "Cemal and Celal in the Thought of Ibn Arabi" and Asst. Prof. Arzu Eylül Yalçınkaya “The symbolism of lovers in Rumi’s Mesnevi-i Mânevî.”.

It will take place face-to-face and online

In the Summer School program under the coordinatorship of Üsküdar University Institute for Sufi Studies, Asst. Prof. F. Cangüzel Güner Zülfikar, It will be possible to participate face-to-face or online. The intensive program of our Summer School will be carried out with the support of Sufi Corner and Kerim Foundation.

Summer School seminars were also structured as a master's and doctoral course titled Approaches to Sufi Texts. The program can be taken within the scope of a credit elective course or a certified education program. All participants who complete the program will be awarded a summer school certificate.

In the summer school where the language of the program is English and Turkish, the courses offered in English will be translated into Turkish, and the courses offered in Turkish will be translated into English simultaneously.

Summer school concert and panel will be held

Within the scope of the program, Prof. Dr. Lâ Edrî Sufi Music Society under the direction of Prof. Vasfi Emre Ömürlü, will give a public concert at Ü.U. Nermin Tarhan Hall on 21 July 2022 at 19.00.

A Panel will be held on Saturday, July 23, 2022, at 12.30, with the participation of all experts who teach at the Summer School. Panel will be held open to the public at the Ü.U. Nermin Tarhan Hall.
