President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan was the guest of the live broadcast of TV100's program "Cansu Canan Özgen İle Hayata Dair". Tarhan made remarkable evaluations on the subject of "Is it possible to erase memory?". Stating that brain waves can be managed with the power of thought, Tarhan drew attention to three methods. Tarhan stated that "We bring our minds closer to normal function by doing ECT Rewiring (Normalizing Connections), TMU Reset, Psychotherapy and Neurofeedback Reprogramming (changing wrong thought patterns)."

President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, was a live guest on the "Hayata Dair" program with Cansu Canan Özgen, broadcasted on TV100. Tarhan answered Özgen’s questions on the topic, "Is it possible to erase memory?"

"You face your memories and redefine them."

Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan talked about treatment methods depending on the condition of the diseases:
"We apply some treatment methods that can be understood as 'erasing memory.' One of them is Psychotherapy and Neurofeedback Reprogramming (changing incorrect thought patterns). That is, reprogramming the brain. This happens with psychotherapy. You face your memories and redefine them. You load new meaning, accept them, and learn something from those memories. You reanalyze life events and fears. Then, based on the new situation, you take that information and send it from the pre-memory to the distant memory. These treatments help. We bring the mind closer to its normal function."

Does the brain go back to factory settings?

Tarhan explained that “The second is in the style of TMU reset, it is like the brain reverting to factory settings. Similar applications are made with magnetic stimulation treatments. People who repeat the same things decrease in severity after a while. Magnetic stimulation can bring this to the brain with deep stimulation treatments.

There is also ECT treatment, which we call ECT Rewiring (Normalizing Connections), that is, in the sense of reconstructing the damaged pathways in the brain and recreating the connections. This treatment is especially necessary in OCD disease, severe cases such as psychosis, when the person reaches the point of suicide or when his psychological integrity is at the point of disintegration. In this treatment, the person forgets the events he has experienced. It becomes 'What is this place, where am I?' It is necessary to support this treatment with therapies..."

"We add the 'neurofeedback' method to classic psychotherapy."

Prof. Tarhan expressed that brainwaves can be managed with the power of thought and stated:
"In Reprogramming treatment, we add the neurofeedback method to classic psychotherapy. In this method, electrodes are placed on the person's head according to their disease. These diseases can include post-traumatic stress disorder, aggression, or anxiety. First, we measure the beta and alpha waves in the brain. There is a module that will reduce the higher wave and increase the lower wave, and we apply it. We manage brainwaves with the power of thought."

The pathways in the brain turn into highways...

Tarhan emphasized that medication is needed when therapies are insufficient and stated that
"Think of a computer... If all the information is in the cache, the computer will slow down and will not be able to do anything else. In treatment, we send that information from the cache to the distant memory. Now, the person recalls it when needed, and it does not come involuntarily. The pathways in the brain of these people are like a dirt road; however, they turn into highways. They repeat the same thing with thought repetition. Therefore, therapy alone is not enough. Medication and magnetic stimulation therapy, with electrical treatments, can improve it. There are cases where people commit suicide to forget what they’ve experienced. They say, 'This cannot be lived with.' Let’s not be pessimistic, this is a situation with a solution..."
