Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will address the General Assembly of the Turkish Grand National Assembly during his visit to Ankara on August 15. Commenting on the visit, International Relations expert Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir said, "Abbas will make his voice heard to the world from Türkiye, the heir of the Ottoman state that ruled in Palestine."

Pointing out the importance of Türkiye, as a Muslim country, standing by all the victims, both in solidarity with the Palestinian people and as a state of law, said Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir stated that "Our politicians should clearly express to Mr. Abbas that Türkiye is in full solidarity with the Palestinian people.”

Üsküdar University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Political Science and International Relations, Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir evaluated Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' upcoming visit to Ankara.

Abbas to speak at General Assembly about Israel's atrocities in Gaza

Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir stated that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will address all of Türkiye in the Turkish Grand National Assembly and said that "Abbas will make his voice heard to the world from Türkiye, which is both a NATO member, an important candidate of the European Union and the heir of the Ottoman state that ruled in Palestine. In his speech to the General Assembly, Abbas is expected to discuss Israel's atrocities in Gaza, the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, and the reactions of major powers, regional states and other international actors to this war. It is thought that Abbas will say in his speech that this war against the Palestinian people is unfair according to any criteria and is contrary to international law."

What does Netanyahu's speech to the US Congress say?

Reminding that the war started with Hamas' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir stated that "Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyah claimed in his speech at the US Congres that Hamas consists of rapists and murderers and argued that the war in Gaza is necessary for the security and justice of the world. In his speech, Netanyahu gave the impression that this strategy of total annihilation against the Palestinian people is about defending the Torahic understanding of justice against evil."

"The Zionist narrative is simply wrong"

Stating that there is a narrative that the conflict between Israel and Palestine is related to claims from the Torah and the Bible, Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir continued his remarks as follows:

"According to this, Israel is 'the land promised by God to the Jewish people alone, and it is only the home of the people of Israel until the people of Israel are expelled from their land.' However, the Muslim Ottoman Empire wanted to change this fact. After the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the First World War, and especially the Second World War, the idea was put forward that it was time for the Jews, who were scattered all over the world, to return to their lands. This Zionist narrative is simply false. Because Israel was not established thanks to the Torah and the Bible, but as a nation-state, thanks to the great powers, in their sphere of influence. It is not possible to build states and wage wars independent of the great powers."

The history of Palestinian resistance against the Israeli occupation...

Emphasizing that there is no war that is outside the sphere of influence of the great powers today, Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir stated that "And as we know, war is defined as politics carried out by other means, but at the end of the day, it is still carried out with munition. Since its establishment, Israel has received these munitions from Britain and the United States. Since the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, the great powers have strongly supported Jewish immigration to Israel. The Arab country was gradually transformed into a Jewish-dominated state. The history of Palestinian resistance to Israeli occupation is not a Jewish story told in the Torah and the Bible, but Israel's colonization of Palestine with the help of great powers. That is why Netanyahu was justifying this disproportionate war on civilians in every respect, and not religious people around the world, not religious Jewish people, but US politicians were giving this a standing ovation."

Türkiye, as a Muslim country, stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people

Pointing out that Türkiye, as a country where the majority of the people are Muslims, should assume the role of a single person with two different faces in this senseless and unconscious war period, Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir continued his remarks as follows:

"Our politicians should make it clear to Mr. Abbas that Türkiye is in full solidarity with the Palestinian people. However, Türkiye's solidarity is not only for its religious brothers and sisters, but also for every civilian living there. Türkiye, just like Brazil, Colombia, Spain, Ireland and South Africa, is on the side of the Palestinian people due to its understanding of a modern state. Türkiye, as a Muslim country, stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people and as a state of law, with all the victims. In other words, while Türkiye stands in solidarity with all the victims of this war, it should distance itself from all the interest groups that trigger the war. What is meant by distance here is to go beyond the religious ethical codes and to act within the framework required by modern law and universal moral principles with the tradition of statehood. I think Türkiye should stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, especially when it comes to helping civilians. It is unacceptable to abandon our co-religionists to their fate on this black day."

Hamas defeated Israel on its own land with the October 7, 2023 attack

However, Assoc. Prof. Ali Demir stated that war is a form of communication that requires two sides, and concluded his remarks as follows: "The Palestine Liberation Organization, represented by the 89-year-old Abbas, and Hamas, with whom he has difficulty getting along, are the parties to this communication. Abbas will make his speech both as an opponent of the Hamas organization, which is a party to the war, and as a representative of the aggrieved Palestinian people. With the October 7, 2023 attack, Hamas defeated Israel on its own land and gained respect in the eyes of Muslims and all those who stand by the just cause of the Palestinian people. Türkiye is in solidarity with the Palestinian people; however, I think it is important for the security of the region that the Palestine Liberation Organization pursues a policy within the framework of the necessity of a democratic state of law in the face of its inaction and Hamas' actions."
