Üsküdar University, Faculty of Communication, Department of Visual Communication Design, faculty member Assoc. Prof. Cem Tutar has a new assignment. Tutar, who draws attention with his academic studies in the field of urban and carries out studies at the intersection of urban sociology and communication from an interdisciplinary perspective, was elected as a Member of the Executive Board at the Üsküdar City Council General Assembly Meeting.

Üsküdar City Council General Assembly Meeting was held on Friday, July 19, 2024 at Bağlarbaşı Congress and Culture Center. At the meeting held with the participation of Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş, Dedetaş emphasized the importance of the City Council and said that she wished the council to be an active, multi-participatory, open to every voice and every window.

At the meeting held under the chairmanship of Üsküdar Municipality Deputy Chairman of the Council Mithat Özdemir, the election of the chairman of the City Council and the members of the executive committee was held first. While the President of the City Council, Sündüs Nazan Tok, was elected, the election of the Executive Board was held with the majority of votes.

At the Üsküdar City Council General Assembly Meeting, Assoc. Prof. Cem Tutar, who is a faculty member of the Faculty of Communication, Department of Visual Communication Design and the Head of the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Department of Media and Cultural Studies and is the representative of Üsküdar University, conveyed his studies in the field of urban education at the master's and doctoral levels to the audience. Tutar, who works at the intersection of urban sociology and communication from an interdisciplinary perspective, has conducted academic studies on many districts and regions of İstanbul such as Beşiktaş, Cihangir, Karaköy, Nişantaşı and Taksim, two of which are based in Üsküdar. These studies have been shared as national and international books, articles and papers. In his speech, Tutar drew attention with his work and also shared his work on the Sustainable Cities and Communities label at Üsküdar University, which received all 17 labels according to the 2024 results of the impact ranking of Times Higher Education (THE), the world university ranking organization, in line with the United Nations Sustainability Goals.

After his speech, Assoc. Prof. Cem Tutar was elected as a member of the Executive Board of Üsküdar City Council.

What Does the City Council Do?

The City Council is a civil society platform that brings together important actors in the city. The city council, which is the meeting place of representatives of public institutions, civil society, professional organizations, political parties, mukhtars and universities, acts with the principle of inclusivity. City councils are legally a civil organization that comes together upon the call of the mayor in accordance with the relevant article of the municipal law (article 76). To mobilize voluntary solidarity in the city, the city council has functions such as bringing together various stakeholders in the city to discuss problems with a common mind, providing an environment of reconciliation between different stakeholders, and providing new communication opportunities between public institutions and other segments of society.
