Dr. Ayla Arslan: “A change of perspective is needed towards Wikipedia”

Üsküdar University Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics Instructor Asst. Prof. Ayla Arslan participated in the conference titled ‘EduWiki 2023’ organized by Wikimedia Foundation in Belgrade. Asst. Prof. Arslan performed a presentation on the topic of ‘Service Learning and Wikipedia Literacy as a Pedagogical Tool in Higher Education’ within the framework of International Support. Dr. Arslan stated that a change of perspective is needed towards Wikipedia by academicians and in higher education institutions.

Pointing out the importance of universities to contribute to society effective in terms of social impact in her presentation, Asst. Prof. Arslan emphasized that it has a critical important for universities to realize the third mission. Asst Prof. Arslan highlighted that higher education institutions are not showing interest sufficiently to Wikipedia, which is non-profit and open source encyclopedia, although it is one of the top ten websites visited worldwide.

Dr. Arslan stated that a change of perspective is needed towards Wikipedia by academicians and in higher education institutions. Asst. Prof. Arslan said that: "On the other hand, the service learning method, which is an academic teaching methodology that combines meaningful service to society with curriculum-based learning, contributes to the development of Wikipedia articles by students writing Wikipedia in the fields related to the subject of the course, and contributing to both social service and the development of students and gaining skills such as information literacy necessary for the 21st century.".
