Dr. Babak Kateb

Dr Babak Kateb is a renowned neuroscientist and neurotech serial entrepreneur with more than 22 years of experience in research, development, and neurotech commercialization. 
His research has been focused on the introduction of advanced neurotechnologies, diagnostics, and therapeutics into clinical neuroscience, aiming at the rapid introduction of game-changing Technologies, for treating neuropsychiatric disorders such as brain cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and neuro-psychiatry and spinal disorders. 
He did his educational training at TUSOM, USC, and research fellowship at USC-Keck School of Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, California Institute of Technology, and NASA-JPL. He also studied VLSI system design at the USC Department of Electrical Engineering.
In 2004, he established the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT) and the International Brain Mapping Foundation (IBMF) while doing his research fellowship at Keck School of Medicine, Caltech, and NASA-JPL. Currently, he is the founding chairman of the board of directors & CEO of  SBMT, President and Scientific Director of the IBMF, Chairman of Brain Technology Innovation Park , Chairman of Neuroscience20/7 of the G20, and G7 summits, and Director of the National Center for Nano-Bio-Electronics. He is a recipient of many awards including the Pioneer in Medicine award of SBMT in 2015 and UNESCO’s Medical Merit Award in 2021.  
Dr Kateb was the  Director of Research and Development in the Department of Neurosurgery at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center where he helped to set up the Department of Neurosurgery and established collaboration with NASA. He published and pioneered the technique for using NASA’s multiwall carbon nanotubes to activate macrophages for brain cancer nano-immunotherapy. While at the City of Hope, he received NASA’s Tech Brief Award for his pioneering work on sniffing out cancer cells using NASA’s electronic nose.
In 2010, he joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Cedars Sinai Medical Center as a research scientist where he developed a partnership between Cedars-Sinai and NASA and established a clinical trial using NASA’s UV imaging for intraoperative brain mapping. He also patented technology to treat brain cancer using microwaves, which was approved by the FDA for soft tissue usage. 
Dr Kateb has been at the forefront of neuroscience and neurotech innovation advocacy and policy working closely with the United States Congressional neuroscience caucus and has chaired 9 congressional briefings at the US Congress. He was one of the key scientists who advised US President Obama on the BRAIN Initiative. He has spoken at the Canadian and Australian Parliaments helping in the formulation of their Brain Initiative, advising and educating their policymakers.
He has chaired 8 sessions at the G20 summits in, Australia (2014), Turkiye (2015), China (2016), Germany (2017), Argentina (2018), Japan (2019), Saudi Arabia (2020), Italy (2021) and will be chairing the N20 summit in Indonesia in 2022. 
Moreover, he is currently collaborating with Los Alamos National Lab, and Oak Ridge National Lab, which involves the use of Artificial Intelligence, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and supercomputing for brain mapping and therapeutics.  
Dr. Kateb has published more than 38 papers (within the scope of Scopus) including a publication in Nature-scientific review. He holds many patents and continues with his trailblazing research, innovation, and commercialization in Med Tech, Neurotech, and Biotech fields. He is the editor of the inaugural Textbook of Nanoneuroscience and Nanoneurosurgery, and is the editor of the inaugural Neurophotonic and Brain Mapping textbook in 2017.
Not only a reknowned scientist he is also a talented artist who has had gallery exhibitions  for his paintings and currently produces medical illustration for medical textbooks;
