Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "It is not necessary to advise, but to walk together"
Later, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan met with Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Fatma Şahin and visited Gaziantep Family Academy. At the meeting held at the Tarhan, Family Academy, which was previously at the opening, the suicide prevention action plan in Gaziantep was discussed. Underlining that the work carried out by the municipality should be projected, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan mentioned that nearly half of the people who committed suicide were hopeless and pessimistic people. Pointing out that people who know empathy should take part in such a valuable project, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that it is important not to advise people in suicide cases, but to take them with them and walk together.
"Gaziantep will be a serious pioneer in this regard"
Expressing his ideas within the scope of the 'Connect to Life' project, which will be put into operation by Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, Tarhan said that cooperation can be made in the project and stated that "I see the Family Academy as a project that has been implemented on the subject of family. It has a variety of functions at the moment. One of them evaluates the person's psychological disorders, provides family counseling, spiritual counseling and legal counseling. While doing all this, there is a serious teamwork. Here, the Family Academy has started and made it sustainable. A serious example of social municipalism is a center that works on the family. It also constitutes an important pillar related to suicide. This topic is a second neighbor work program as a suicide prevention and assistance project. In such cases, it is necessary to identify the people in need and reach them individually. There is an epidemic of suicide all over the world. Gaziantep will be a serious pioneer in this regard with this center and its works, and if this is the case, it will also be a pioneer in Türkiye. A project that will be a reference for this in the world seems to be in the literature. I think this sensitivity will pay off."
