Prof. Nevzat Tarhan met with his readers at the TÜYAP book fair
President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist and Author Prof. Nevzat Tarhan met with his readers at the 41st TÜYAP International Book Fair this year. Tarhan, who was interviewed under the title of "Psychology Talks", signed his books for his readers. In the interview and signing program, there was a lot of interest in Tarhan. Drawing attention to the fact that brand propaganda is made with the effect of social media, Tarhan expressed that "Imperialism used to be done through repression. Now there is a question of voluntary imperialism. Popular culture imperialism is spreading more and more with the influence of social media. They rule us with brand propaganda. These are all methods of brainwashing."
The 41st International Istanbul Book Fair, held between November 2-10, brought together hundreds of authors from Istanbul and surrounding cities with the participation of more than a thousand publishing houses and non-governmental organizations.
First of all, a conversation titled "Psychology Talks" was held under the moderation of Journalist Şaban Özdemir. The interview held in the Marmara Hall attracted the interest of the participants.
"What we should really be afraid of is the crisis in the family"
Drawing attention to the crises in the family, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that healthy children cannot grow up in an environment without a family. Tarhan stated that "The wars in the world will now be psychological warfare. Since this psychological warfare will be in the form of a war of ideas, public mental health will also pay this price. We are missing the real agenda because of the political agenda at the moment. The real agenda is our family, our children and our youth. There are serious risks for the future of our children. Capital does not end itself, and it decreases and increases but still continues. In other words, after there is no war, the economy recovers. What we should really be afraid of is the crisis in the family. Healthy children do not grow up in an environment where there is no family. Now open marriages have multiplied. They call it modernity, and they see it as freedom. However, freedom consists of two parts. The first part is one's own freedom. The second part is the freedom not to harm anyone else. It is also a freedom not to harm someone else. There is a balance of freedom and responsibility. They can no longer be taught in society. At the very least, we have a responsibility to protect our own space, our own home, our own relatives and our own relationships..."
“Capitalism is taking steps towards self-correction."
Talking about the ideology of capitalism, Tarhan stated that "Capitalism held that man was an economic being. He used to say that when people invest and spend their money, they always do it according to profit-loss analysis, but Kahneman, who received the behavioral economics award in the 2000s, said, ‘Man is not Homo economicus, but homo psychological. Man is a psychological being.’ Capitalism used to say, 'Helping a person increases the cost of business. It is wrong to help, and it is wrong to give alms. Let the strong live, and the weak die.' That was the ideology of capitalism. Now it is starting to condemn itself. In other words, capitalism is taking steps towards self-correction."
"Popular culture imperialism is spreading more with the influence of social media"
These are all methods of brainwashing. They are methods of cyber warfare. Those who do not comply will remain clean, and those who do will be wasted. If more than 50 percent of the society says 'No' to this to combat the pitfalls brought about by modernism, the problem will be solved. As we train people, these will multiply. Good people will multiply and fix this. Let's not be hopeless and pessimistic..."
We will start to change the world from ourselves...
Drawing attention to the fact that people with low self-confidence have arrogance, Tarhan stated that "There is a Chinese proverb that says, 'If a person acts by blaming others, they have a long way to go. If they act by blaming themselves, they are halfway there; however, if one is goal-oriented without blaming anyone, that person will reach their goal.’ We will start changing the world from ourselves. We are going to fix ourselves. Each person has their own personality window in their view of life. There is a social communication window through which it connects with social life. If the personality is of low value for a person, they will contract and hold themselves upright while looking out of the window, they will walk around with a contraction. If the value is higher, one looks modestly through the window of life. That is why people with low self-esteem are arrogant. People with high self-esteem do not need arrogance. They behave modestly when establishing social relations with their normal gaze. There are people who walk around the cemetery whistling. 'What a brave person,' you say. In fact, they were struggling with the fear. That person so frightened that they whistle, trying to play the role of the brave. Therefore, if you gather all the evil in one room, arrogance opens the door and lies open."
"Medium and long-term investment is preventive mental health"
Emphasizing the three stages in mental health treatments, Tarhan stated that "Primary protection is what needs to be done so that people do not get sick. The scientific equivalent of this is positive psychology applications. There is a treasure trove in our culture for preventive mental health. Secondary prevention is also early diagnosis. Identifying risk groups is an early diagnosis. To be able to treat without reaching the point of hospitalization, without the need for major treatments, early diagnosis. Tertiary prevention is the protection to prevent recurrence after the disease has passed. Medium and long-term investment is preventive mental health. Short-term investment is to deal with today's cure..."
"Sanctifying the individual is the ideology of the capitalist system"
Stating that people set a good example for their environment as they correct their inner world, Tarhan expressed that "Yunus Emre says, 'My journey was from myself to myself'. As we correct the journey in our own inner world, we unwittingly set a good example for our children and our environment. It is a difficult journey, of course. Self-criticism and self-questioning are not something that everyone can easily achieve. Psychology has just begun to accept this. Before that, it was said, 'Family is not important, you are important, let them live their life. The individual is sacred, and the family is not sacred.' Both the individual and the family are mechanisms. That is, if one is sacred, both are sacred, and if not, neither of them is sacred. In other words, sanctifying the individual is the ideology of the capitalist system."
"The biggest jury in the world is the jury of ‘others’..."
Answering the questions from the participants, Tarhan made the following suggestions about marriage: "Keep your eyes open before you get married, open your eyes half after you get married. Marriage is the life that best suits human nature. Sexuality is biological, but marriage is cultural. Marriage is a place of trust. You will experience difficulties, and you will overcome them. The high level of economic expectations at this time makes people take a step back. The expectations of both sides should be the same. Both parties will be able to be happy with the little things, and if they succeed, it is impossible for the couple not to be happy. The worst enemy of marriage is greed. The largest jury in the world is the jury of ‘others’. Never mind the jury. The main thing is the agreement of the spouses. Do not be afraid of marriage at all."
"The real freedom is to be free from your desires and impulses"
Stating that target-oriented detail brings success, Tarhan expressed that "Procrastination disease occurs in people with a high level of perfectionism. In other words, is success in the details or the devil in the details as you move forward on the path of life? Perfectionists say success is in the details. For example, when a person was going somewhere, they wanted something on the way, and they delayed it. One delays to its destination. However, if a person attaches importance to goal-oriented details, they will lead to success, but if they allocate time to non-target-oriented details, they cannot manage time. In other words, a person who manages time prevents the weakness of procrastination. For example, when you get away from the goal while doing a job, you can say, 'Remember why you are working. Remember why you are doing it, remember your purpose.' People can overcome emotions such as laziness. That is why you have to say no to yourself. The real freedom is not to break down walls, to break chains, to live care free. The real freedom is to be free from your desires and impulses. Distraction feelings exist in all of us. These are emotions that lead to laziness. Past generations had matured in poverty. Current generations are maturing in wealth. It is more difficult to mature in wealth.”
