President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan was the guest of the 'Orhan Ayhan'la’ program broadcast on TRT Spor. In the program where the subject of "Sports and Violence in Sports" was discussed, Tarhan said that every person is a candidate to be a fanatic. Likening anger to nuclear energy, Tarhan expressed that "If anger is managed in a good way, it becomes a power plant and illuminates the city; however, if it is mismanaged, it will explode and destroy." Tarhan emphasized that anger in sports is an area that can be directed.

Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, who was the guest of the program hosted by Orhan Ayhan, drew attention to sports and violence in sports.

"There is a gentlemanship in the spirit of sports"

Stating that the brain produces endorphins during sports, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that sports bring discipline. Tarhan "There is a gentlemanship in the spirit of sports. We can help hyperactive children gain discipline by directing them to sports. Sport gives the child inner discipline. A person who learns the rules of sports, learns to live by rules, and does this in a fun and disciplined way can both manage their anger and use their energy in the right direction. A person's healthy self-development is called kinesthetic intelligence. Sport is the field of developing kinesthetic intelligence. During sports, the brain produces endorphins. Those who actually devote themselves to sports also produce a substance similar to brain morphine in such a serious way. In fact, while doing sports, the muscles are tense, but the athletes do not feel any pain. As soon as you sit on the side, rest and the body cools down, the pain begins. They do not feel pain or ache because they love sports at an extreme pace, they get carried away, and the brain produces morphine. Morphine has two properties. One is pain-relieving, the second is pleasurable. Sport is also addictive. Those who do sports will be restless if they cannot do sports when the time comes. It has a beneficial addictive effect. When a person makes it a habit, they continue it. In fact, when you quit sports suddenly, heart diseases can occur. In other words, the body programs itself accordingly."

"They experience a sense of flow and their performance improves"

Talking about the studies carried out to increase the focus of the athletes, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that "When cats see a bird, they lock in. Cats get locked in such a way that he falls down from the 3rd floor, but he jumps on his prey. He doesn't hear any sounds coming from around him. 'I wonder if we can do this to the athletes?' That is, so that they do not hear these curses and insults. They should be so focused that they don't hear anything about the match and don't get angry. Projects are currently being carried out on behalf of this. If this is taught, that person is closed to outside influence, he only focuses on his work. Look at the successful ones. When they enter the match, they feel like they are in a different universe. It's called a sense of flow. For example, a scientist enters the laboratory, hours pass, he does not know how to work. A person who acts with this sense of flow in sports gets so carried away that sports give him great pleasure. Success comes after it. Football players who do these things are closed to external influence, they focus on a subject, they experience a great sense of flow and their performance increases."

"If there is an objective love in team keeping, it is realistic love"

Stating that there should be objective love in team keeping, Tarhan said that "What makes football original is the big crowd stands. There is a cheerleading group there and they are organizing. Therefore, these are dedicated people, and most of them are fanatics. There is a group of fanatics and there are other masses. Every person is a candidate to be a fanatic. For example, you support a team. For what purpose do you keep that team? Do you blindly support the team, or do you keep it because you love football? If there is an objective love in team keeping, it is realistic love. In other words, you support the team, you love it, but you do not blindly support it. You call your mistakes wrong. This will make the team better, but if there is such blind fanatical love, it will also defend the team's mistakes. When they defend their mistakes, athletes continue to make mistakes. That is why the spectators should love football for football."

"Anger is like nuclear energy..."

Stating that getting angry in the stadium is seen as a method of emptying the heart, Tarhan expressed that "That moment is the expressible and acceptable space of anger and aggression. There are people who go to the game just for this. For example, there was a time when men were forbidden to enter the game. There was a time when only women enter. They ask the women how the match went. 'It was very fun,' they say. They ask men. They say, 'It was an incredible game.' Women are emotional. The male brain and the female brain work differently. The male brain wants to express aggression. It is important to be able to manage this. Anger is like nuclear energy. If you manage nuclear energy in a good way, it will become a power plant, it will illuminate the city. If you manage it in a bad way, it will explode and destroy. Therefore, our emotion of anger is like a wild horse. Anger in sports is an acceptable and manipulable area. It is necessary to leave the anger in football on the field. If they do not reflect that anger in their private life or outside, there is no harm in anger."

"Sport is a regulated environment"

Stating that the natural result of the wrong behavior should be experienced, Tarhan concluded his remarks as follows: "In such cases, the natural conclusion must be reasonable. If one does it intentionally, it is different because these violent acts and aggressive acts, harm someone else. We have no right to harm anyone else. Sport is a regulated environment. Even though it is football, you have to follow the rules. Those who do not follow the rules pay the price. There needs to be a fair management in sports. That is why it is important for referees to be objective. Club presidents have an important role to play in managing anger. Because we are a leader-type society, people look at the leader. If the leader is angry, the others are angrier. That is why anger management needs to learn. If we teach the athlete stress management and anger management, a person can get angry, but they should manage anger. If they can think about why they angry, they can manage their anger."
