Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Head of Nutrition and Dietetics Department Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan made important statements about rapid weight loss and shock diets.

Life without sugar is unrealistic!

Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan stated that it does not reflect the truth of the common belief that a permanent change can be achieved with diets that last 21 days and expressed that "The type of sugar is very important. Sugar is not just used in tea or bread; however, fruits also contain sugar, namely fructose. For this reason, it is not possible to maintain a completely sugar-free diet, because there are also invisible types of sugar in foods.

Beware of pickled foods!

Stating that the consumption of processed foods and pickled foods should be avoided, Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan said that due to the amount of salt and sodium they contain, processed foods and pickled foods can cause many ailments such as hypertension, stomach and mouth cancers. It is important that it is not possible to have a fat-free diet, except for visible oils such as olive oil and butter, there are naturally found oils in the foods themselves. Arslan pointed out that the amount of consumption and the type of oil taken.

We do not recommend white bread!

Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan noted that the glycemic index alone is not enough and stated that "Glycemic load is also important. For example, half a carrot placed on top of a salad is not expected to seriously affect blood sugar. There are those who do not put carrots in the salad. They say, ‘It is sugary, and I think I will gain weight.’ However, it is the amount of carrots that matters here rather than the consumption. You can also consume bananas. Some people are removing bananas from their lives. They remove potatoes from their life, as I mentioned before, the quantity; In other words, the glycemic load is important here. You can also consume bread, but it is important which type of bread it is. We don't recommend white bread very much. You can consume potatoes. The way of cooking is very important. Roast or boil? If it is boiled, that is, if it is hot, for example, if it is eaten by cooling, it lowers the glycemic index a little more. This is very important."

Not eating after 6 pm is not suitable for everyone!

Stating that "Dietary recommendations such as not eating after 6 pm are not suitable for everyone,” Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan emphasized that nutrition plans should be personalized according to the lifestyle of the individual. Stating that it is not possible for those who need to stay up late at night to comply with such diets, Arslan expressed that "It is not right to eat nothing after six pm for people who have problems in regulating blood sugar. An individual's lifestyle, working processes and patterns vary according to sleep/wake processes and medical history. If there is a serious hypoglycemia and if there is a serious problem with blood sugar regulation, meal times should be arranged accordingly."

Is the goal healthy weight loss?

Referring to the issue of whether two or three meals a day should be consumed, Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan stated that "It is absolutely not right to eat only 2 meals or a single meal. This needs to be questioned well. Is the goal weight loss, or is it not to regain the lost weight, or is it healthy weight loss? This is very important. Too many unscientific wrong methods, shock diets can be applied, weight loss also occurs, but then it causes serious problems. There are even hormonal changes. For this reason, it is very important what the goal is."

2 liters of water a day is not a rule that applies to everyone!

Stating that individual differences are not considered in terms of water consumption, Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan said that "2 liters of water per day is not a rule that applies to everyone. Water consumption should be adjusted according to the lifestyle of the individual and it is important to make it sustainable by making behavioral changes in the long term."

Diet programs are like fingerprints...

Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan underlined that nutrition programs should be specific to the individual and stated that "The biggest factor in the failure of diets or nutrition programs is classical lists. The nutrition of the person is very important, and the nutrition lists prepared in this direction are like fingerprints and should be prepared according to the person. The lifestyle should be questioned very well, and a list and nutrition process should be created accordingly. The most important factor in the failure of the weight loss processes and the regain of the lost weight is that the lists prepared are not suitable for the lifestyle of the individual."

Behavior change should be parallel to lifestyle

Emphasizing that it is absolutely necessary to get support from an expert in diet and nutrition, Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan expressed that "Behavior change is very important, but this behavior change should be parallel to the lifestyle. It is very important to go with a specialist during the weight loss process. Adequate and balanced nutrition and healthy nutrition are very important."

Drawing attention to sweeteners, Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan said that "We are in favor of staying away from sweeteners because they contain substances such as aspartame and Acesulfame-K, which can lead to very serious diseases such as stomach ailments and cancer. A life will be healthier by avoiding simple sugars."

Pointing out that there is a holistic approach in the slimming process, Arslan drew attention to the importance of the nutritionist creating the diet of the individual, the physician being present in the medical process and exercising in the presence of an expert. Assoc. Prof. Müge Arslan concluded her remarks as follows: "It is a process that should be taken with a multidisciplinary approach. If you really want to lose weight healthily, this process should be taken with a nutrition and diet specialist."
