Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: "Holidays are the medicine for poverty of empathy"

President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that holidays experienced after challenging times enforces empathy and brings out the power of morale values as it is the tip of the iceberg. Tarhan said that: “There are different stages in a person’s life. We are experiencing the first festival after these challenging times. Therefore, when we exchange holiday greetings, we must remember that we are also in a post-traumatic period. We must think that how we can do more for those who were affected by the earthquake, and how can we help them. While one side of the society is unhappy, other side cannot be happy.”.

President of Üsküdar University, Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan made remarks on the important of holidays and its place within the society. Noting that the value of holidays on social life is very universal, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that holidays teach the relationship managements and the important of relationship formed on the opportunity of holidays.

One side of the society cannot be happy while the other side is unhappy

Stating that the post-earthquake period is one of the most challenging periods of our lives, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said, "There are different periods in human life. Here, we, as a country, are experiencing our first holiday after a challenging period. Due to the earthquake, our Ramadan Feast is a bit bittersweet. Therefore, we must remember that we are also in a post-traumatic period while celebrating. Let's think about what more we can do and how we can help the people affected by the earthquake during the holiday. One part of the society cannot be happy while the other side is unhappy. The fewer disadvantaged people there are, the happier society is. Holidays are days to increase happiness.".

Living without thinking of others is the greatest enemy of global peace

Underlining that the holidays are the times when the beauty of being a family is felt the most Tarhan said that "This holiday, we are experiencing a feeling that we think about other families while we are with our own family. By experiencing the concept of empathy at the highest level, we feel that solidarity and good deeds are revitalized and mobilized. Just like the tip of the iceberg, we feel that the morale value of the holiday is revealed. Living without thinking of others is the greatest enemy of global peace. Selfish life is the greatest enemy of global peace. We will overcome this difficult period with empathy. It is quite necessary that we take this into account and that we have made the holidays a culture, and they have social benefits. The most important benefit is to the family structure. We should see the holidays as an increase in social capital in the family.".

Holidays are the medicine for the poverty of empathy

Emphasizing that there is a poverty of empathy today, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said, "Holidays are the medicine for the poverty of poverty. It is the medicine of learning. It is necessary to go to the Eid prayer with our child, to give it to the hand of the child and say them to give it while helping others, to teach not only to receive, but also to give. Life is not a trade, but it the giving is receiving. The giver wins. It is necessary to live by sharing during the holiday. A society inhabited by people who always me, will not find peace. There is no peace in the inner world of that person and in the societies that always live by saying always me, and there is no peace in the family. There is competition between the person who says let me eat the best place and the other siblings. Fights break out, there is no peace in the house. It is also the same in society.".

Holidays are the most entertaining life lesson in which adults will lead children

Stating that the holidays are the most entertaining life lesson in which the adults will lead the little ones, Tarhan said that "It is necessary not to take away the sense of hope that especially children meet with their elders. If we take this away from children, if we speak desperately and pessimistically, it will cause the greatest harm to children and wound the developing soul of children. Holidays make children live the moments when they meet with their elders, share their troubles if they have, and make their elders happy with their happiness. We once again realized how important solidarity is after the disaster period. This process has once again enabled us to understand the importance and value of being able to breathe, the importance and value of our family, the value of our loved ones, our friends and associates. More importantly, we felt the importance of solidarity, which is one of the most important elements of high human values, and the power of the emotion. Children learn to develop behavior from their family. The information given in the form of lectures, advices and preaching does not last in the developing soul of children. For this reason, holidays are the most entertaining life lesson that ensures that high human values are passed on from generation to generation, ancient knowledge that will be earrings is transmitted, and adults will lead the children.".

Holidays teach relationship management

Stating that another aspect of the holidays is to cooperate with other people, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "It enables us to chat, share and establish relationships with our family and loved ones.”. Stating that holidays are where we learn relationship management, Tarhan noted that holidays contribute to the spiritual and psychological enrichment of people. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that "This is possible by learning sharing, relationship management and paying regard to the rights of others. Empathy is not crying together with a person who is crying, however, it is understanding their feelings and establishing a relationship by considering their needs and rights. There are many people in society who are disadvantaged or waiting for help. It is also necessary to consider them. Holidays are an opportunity to give spiritual help to these people in some way. Let our children experience the beauty and taste of doing good deeds. Let's teach these meanings of the holidays to our children.".
