Electromagnetic pollution increasing due to technological development has an adverse effect on health

Prof. Osman Çerezci said that electromagnetic pollution increasing due to technological developments has an impact on health of all living beings and noted that electromagnetic radiation factor must be also included besides the factor such as heat, isolation while apartments are built.

Giving statements on effects of electromagnetic pollution to AA reporter, Üsküdar University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences Dean Prof. Çerezci emphasized that this kind of pollution is accepted as environmental pollution in the literature.

Pointing out that many devices used in communication tools and homes work with electricity, and that energy use increases as technology advances, Çerezci stated that all working devices emit a type of light called electromagnetic radiation to the environment.

Underlining that the World Health Organization declared electromagnetic pollution as a carcinogen in 2001, Çerezci made remarks on the health problems that people who are exposed to electromagnetic radiation excessively may experience, and said that "It is now apparent that it has some effects such as especially brain disorders, nervousness and restlessness.".

Çerezci said that there are research showing that not only humans but also animals are affected by electromagnetic pollution, and in a research, a decrease in the productivity of honey bees exposed to electromagnetic pollution was detected.

The result of the research conducted in 3 districts

Çerezci warned that the level of electromagnetic pollution in metropolises is higher than in other cities and that electromagnetic pollution in Istanbul varies between 3.5 and 4.2 V / m (volts per meter); moreover, that this level tends to increase. Çerezci explained that they carried out electromagnetic pollution measurement studies in houses together with Ataşehir, Maltepe and Kadıköy municipalities and shared the information that the electromagnetic radiation level measured was 3.14 in Kadıköy, 3.42 in Ataşehir and 3.71 V / m in Maltepe.

Çerezci said that "The limit is constantly being changed in our country. The base stations are managed by the Information and Communication Technologies Authority and we are trying to reduce the limits as much as possible in our country. There are several tiered limits. The first limit is; 9.15 volts/meter. The 3-4 values we just mentioned are below this limit.".

Noting that people living near a high-voltage line or a power distribution unit to be concerned should definitely have how much electromagnetic pollution they are exposed to, Çerezci reminded that these measurements can be made on individual requests.

"Electromagnetic pollution should be considered as a settlement parameter"

Çerezci advised that electrical devices should be kept turned off when they are not in use to avoid exposure to electromagnetic radiation and listed the individual precautions that could be taken as follows:
"In addition to factors such as heat and isolation considered when constructing buildings, the electromagnetic radiation factor should be added and electromagnetic pollution should be considered as a settlement parameter. We need to pay attention to the arrangement of rooms in our homes, the environment in the room, the way the items are placed. For example, it is necessary not to place children's bed near the places where the sockets are located, and not to make it a bedside. If the microwave is working, it is necessary to stand at a certain distance and not to wait in front of it when it is working. By taking such precautions, we can reduce electromagnetic radiation exposure to a minimum.".

Highlighting the importance of keeping mobile phones off or keeping a distance away from the bedside of the mobile phone to maintain sleep quality, Çerezci said that "When we sleep, it seems that our body is physically resting, however, our body is shopping and interacting with this electromagnetic field pollution; therefore, we cannot say that our brain is resting. When we get up, we are tired and there is really little chance of starting the day healthy.".

Çerezci also mentioned the possible impact of 5G technology on electromagnetic pollution, which aims to provide services for wireless network connections and many applications in a faster and more practical way, and completed his remarks as follows:

"In 2000-2001, the level of electromagnetic radiation around us was 0.1 volts divided by meters when base stations first came out. Thus, it was not even 1 unit. The more the base station spreads in cities, the more electromagnetic pollution increases. When 5G's are activated, more frequently installed base stations will be around us, this is a fact and it is possible to predict that this value may increase by 2 times.".
