Mehmet Yakup Tuna graduated from İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1975. Tuna completed his medical specialty education in the field of Anatomy and General Surgery in 1984. Tuna got the title of associate professor in 1987 and the title of professor in 1996.
