Drawing attention to the recent increase in violent incidents, arguments in traffic, domestic murders, people killing each other in the middle of the street, President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that there is group stress in the society due to drug use. Stating that the incidents should be seriously examined, Tarhan said that the incidents of violence may continue to increase.

Delusions lead to massacre

Reminding that the painful events in which mass deaths are experienced are experienced in cases of paranoid schizophrenia, Tarhan said that "Due to paranoid delusions, people write a scenario in their heads. It carries out its actions within this plan.”

Explaining that there is a method developed to prevent these events in developed countries, Prof. Tarhan said that "In that method, there is a responsible psychiatrist in each region. This psychiatrist ensures that the necessary medical attention is given to those responsible in such an event. Individuals are being examined. In Türkiye, such a structure can be established within the family medicine system."

Explaining that people are nervous and unhappy, Tarhan said that "There is intolerance to uncertainty. In such cases, sick people become more fragile and more aggressive."

Stating that family massacres can become routine, Tarhan said that "Work should be done by finding the root causes of the events. However, identities should be kept confidential so that they do not cause secondary trauma."

As addiction increases, incidents increase

Emphasizing that many psychiatric patients are wandering on the streets without treatment, Tarhan said that "In fact, if this person is a clinical case, he could have given up this plan if he could have been hospitalized for a few weeks. However, it is not right to make a hundred percent evaluation of this case without any examination, but there are too many psychiatric patients and there is a very high probability that these cases will increase." Tarhan reminded that paranoia combined with alcohol and substance addiction has increased even more.
